Why do majority of parents don’t support their kids dream?
When a mother takes her first glance at her baby born in her arms, she cries with tears of joy knowing that she will do everything in her power to protect her baby against all evil. One of a parent’s worst nightmare is to see their child fail and have no control over it. However, Michael Jordan once said that “in order to succeed you must fail”. Failure doesn’t determine you who you are as a person, standing back up on your own two feet and not giving up is what makes you who you are. To be who you are, you must be able to follow your dreams and take risks and being a parent this must scare them to bits. So they play it safe and decide your whole future for you and what they think is right. Their intentions are good, but their way of raising a child is bad. One of the the most common cause of depression is parental pressure. They want you to be the best and in order to do that your happiness doesn’t come first. But let me tell you something, you are living your life for yourself, you are not your parents and you can change this.
Being raised in a conservative Arabic family, education always came first. I was never good in school because of the lack of interest I had and I already had my life mapped out from my parents. Once I graduate high school I must become a doctor. I never had a choice or any other options because as a kid I was told that being a doctor was the best, so I went along with it. However, during my second year I became depressed and I was bored with the subjects I was taking, so I stopped studying and started getting bad grades. This is not due to laziness, but due to a lack of interest. I know my parents want the best for me, but I could not pretend to be someone I’m not anymore. One of the most important role of a parent is to make sure their child’s happiness comes first and not the society or the money. We all have a dream, its just what are you willing to do to make it happen? What risk are you willing to take? Don’t let the thought of failure keep you from following your dreams and don’t let anyone tell you you are not good enough or you will fail because you are human and we all fail at some point in our lives, we fail ourselves, our parents, the society.
It is what it is. Take every chance you get in this life with no regrets and no matter how terrible your life is at the moment just know that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel if you keep going and don’t give up. Parents should support you and be your backbone throughout everything, they should be your guide and tell you what’s right or wrong, but at the same time you will make mistakes and fall and when you do they should be there pushing you to stand right back up. Nothing is compared to a parent’s love and no one in this world would want the best for you, but your parents. So allow them to guide you, but you make your own path. Let them guide you in your journey, but you choose your own destination. Follow your dreams and when you accomplish your dream find another one this is the cycle of life, but once you give up you break the cycle.
