Did you have someone that you looked to as a kid? Did you want to be like Michael Jordan or maybe like Emmitt Smith? Everyone had someone in their life as a little kid that they wanted to be like. You didn’t know it back then, but all these people had something in common. They were all leaders. What is a leader you might say? Well, a leader is a person the guides a group of people. A good leader has to be honest, intelligent, creative, caring, and committed. Odysseus and Everett are both good leaders but have some similarities and some differences. In the next few paragraphs, we are going to explore these similarities and differences.

You would think that Odysseus and Everett are brothers for how similar they are. They are both leaders that are trying to get back to their families. In order to get back to their families, Odysseus and Everett had to be intelligent and creative. They came up with unique ways to get themselves and others out of sticky situations. There were many examples of this in both the book and the movie. Odysseus was creative about to how he got out of the Cyclops cave, and Everett was also creative when he tricked his prison partners to escape with him to find a treasure when there was no treasure.

Another reason that Odysseus and Everett are similar is that the never gave up. They both keep going to get to their family even though they hit many roadblocks on the way. When the car broke done in O, Brother, Where Art Thou, Everett didn’t stop his journey there. He hitched hiked his way home by riding with other people and stealing cars. In the Odyssey, Odysseus was very close to home after many years at sea, but let open a bag of wind that blew him of course. Odysseus could have given up there, but he struggles many more years to eventually find his way home. In the end, both Everett and Odysseus made it home to their wives.

Odysseus and Everett are very similar, but they also have many differences. First of all the stories take place at different times. The Odyssey took place in the 12th-century B.C. in Greece. While on the other hand, the O, Brother, Where Art Thou took place in 1930 in Mississippi. This is saying that Everett is a more modern character then Odysseus is. The second difference is the groups they lead. Odysseus leads a large group of people, while Everett only leads three people. All of Odysseus’s men ended up dying in the end, but Everett leads all of his men to safety. Odysseus cared about his crew more even though they all died. Odysseus’s men never listen to them, but he saves them time after time.

In the Land of Lotus Eaters, Odysseus told his men not to eat the flowers but they did anyway. Odysseus could have let them die but he saved them instead. Everett cared about himself more than he did his crew. When Pete was captured by the sirens Everett left and never looked back. Also, Everett was always concerned about the way he looked. Another big difference is the time each man spent leader. Odysseus leads his group of men for years while Everett only leads his men for a couple months. Lastly, back in the 12th-century people believed in gods and kings. Odysseus was one of the kings. Odysseus was king of Ithaca while Everett was an ordinary prisoner.

If I had to pick between Odysseus and Everett I would choose Odysseus. I would choose Odysseus because he was more concerned in the life of his crew then Everett. All of Odysseus’s men died because they didn’t listen to him. Evan though Odysseus’s men didn’t listen to him he still tried to protect them. For an example, he went back into the land of Lotus Eaters to save three of his me that ate the flowers when Odysseus told him not to. Unlike Odysseus, when Everett lost Pete to the sirens he never looked back and keep going. Also, Everett tricked his men into coming with him to find a treasure. All in all, he just wanted to get home so his wife wouldn’t get remarried. Everett lied to his men and I wouldn’t want a leader that would lie to me. Odysseus also had many the qualities of a good leader. He was creative and clever in how to get out of sticky situations, he cared for the lives of others, he keeps going through hard times, and he was honest. If you have to pick one of them, who would you pick?

In conclusion, they both accomplished their goals in getting home to their families. Each of them has many of the great qualities of being a leader, but they also have some qualities they each need to work on. Everyone has some of the qualities of being a good leader, but it depends if they want to put them together and use them. Everyone needs a leader in their life, so why can’t that be you. They need someone to teach them the right from wrong and lead them in the right directions. Rather you know it or not there is someone looking up to you, so lead them in the right direction.
