In Detroit at a negro grass roots leadership confernce, Malcom X gave his speech “ Message to the Grassroots”, where he speakes on the revolution and compares both the black and negro revoultions. He uses a persuasive tone to get his colored audience to come together against people who excel from white supremacy on a global level.

Malcom X, begins his speech by making it clear that not just black people but all of america has a problem. In his first paragraph he says “America’s problem is us. We’re her problem. The only reason she has a problem is she doesn’t want us here. And every time you look at yourself, be you black, brown, red, or yellow — a so-called Negro — you represent a person who poses such a serious problem for America because you’re not wanted. Once you face this as a fact, then you can start plotting a course that will make you appear intelligent, instead of unintelligent.”He then goes on to describe how we can solve the problem by coming together despite pigment differences or religious beliefs.

Malcom x then continues his speech making his ethos statement appeal to the audience by appealing to the majority of belief in the room by saying “We believe good men more fully and more readily than others…” he asserts himself into the audience. He also strengthens his statement by including himself with being america’s problem, in not excluding himself he’s admitting to be part of the problem along with his. He also reassures them even though they may have many differences between them they’re all under oppression for the same reason.

Malcom then switches to logos, using logic to persuade his black audience to come together instead of fighting each other and putting that energy towards the “White man” but without using any violent methods to be heard and make a strong point. He used an example from a different conference (Bandung) where 29 people from both african and asian descent attending and during that they discussed goals which inculed equlaity, protection of human rights non aggression the importance of coexistence and ending discrimination. And encouraged them to study what happened there along with the results to serve it as a model of what they could do there and solve the problem they face.Using the Bandung conference as a reference united them without all of the means that “white man” has.

Malcom X’s speech had the intent to inform his black audience about the shared enemy and common goal. The goal was to try and bring the community together from the division that was put into place by the terms “house Negro” and “field Negro” when one controlled another. And derive from it bringning true freedom and independence from the same oppressor.
