“Imperialism is a progressive force for both the oppressors and the oppressed.”

Imperialism is extending a country’s control over other nations. It is declared that it was progressive force for both the oppressors and the oppressed. I believe it wasn’t progressive for for the oppressed. Imperialism was an inoperative and negative operation for the oppressed when benefiting the oppressors.

First, in document 1, it states how military and naval leaders believed in extending the “white man’s rule over inferior races”. This shows how imperialism wasn’t just about extending their businesses but getting the chance to control other races so the work could be done for them. This is also show in document 3. Two oppressed people are carrying a wagon with a European oppressor sitting in it. The oppressors were treated as slaves. The oppressed has a painful expression on their face of being tired and used.

In document 4, the author speaks about what a white man has done to their family. This a a major negative effect of imperialism. After the white man caused harm to the family, he ordered a napkin, a chair, and drink. This shows that the man didn’t care or didn’t have any sympathy for the pain he just caused another human being. In document 10, it shows how the land was taken and replaced with a bible. This most likely means the missionaries had an advantage to take the land and replace them with some that they didn’t need to survive. In document 9 it states “Go, bind your sons to exile, to serve your captives’ need”. This expresses how families were split up to go serve there whomever they were captured by. These documents show how the oppressed were taken for granted the oppressors when they were imperialised.
