Horatian satire is used to make something sound indulgent, tolerant, amused, or witty. The speaker holds up to gentle ridicule the absurdities and follies of human beings, aiming at producing in the reader not the anger of a juvenal, but a wry smile. Juvenalian satire, in literature, any bitter and ironic criticism of contemporary persons and institutions that is filled with personal invective, angry moral indignation, and pessimism. In the film Men in black and alien versus humans conflict, they use Horatian and Juvenalian satire to make the manifest the conflict.
Juvenalian Satire is used when the border patrol agents are overly confident, making jokes, less personal than agent kay. He does not recognize the actual alien. Horatian satire is when premise humans in general are stupid because they need to be “protected” from the reality of aliens. Also Horatian satire would be when when Agent Jay was generally skilled and competent, he trusts his senses when he sees out of the ordinary in the alien activity, which is ridiculous but the audience believes him. But the officers are disbelieving him, thinking that he is crazy, making this Juvenalian.
The head quarters were the size of facility, variety of alien life and advanced alien technology was beyond human capability which means “ humans are dumb”, this is an example of Horatian satire. Kay was surveying the women, which we feel sorry for K, what he’s giving up for MiB(Horatian). Juvenilism is added when, “K cares more about the cover up than he does about the alien destroyed, we sympathize with Jay, who is worried about the alien’s themselves.”
When the pug was an actual alien, it was an example of Horatian Satire, “There were bugs crawling out of alien bug’s sleeves”, this makes him even more disgusting to the audience which makes this an example of Juvenilism. The bug calls humans stupid but at least they’re aware of their shortcomings, the bug is limited by his pride, conceit.
K’s insistence on being neutralized, (juvenalian) recognize the emotional toll of this knowledge/ responsibility. Hortation would be used as an example in this film because we want the MiB to be successful. These are all examples of how they use Horatian and Juvenalian Satire to make the films manifest the conflicts.
