Ares is the god of war, son of Zeus and Hera, and brother of the goddesses Eileithyia and Hebe. His half brothers and sisters included Athena, Aphrodite, Apollon, Artemis, Hermes, Dionysus, and Hephaistos.
Ares had three children through his love affair with Aphrodite named Deimos (fear) Phobos (terror) and Harmonia (harmony). Also, he had mortal offspring. Many of them inherited Ares violent temperament and were often seen in the role of villains.
The Family Tree of Ares
Ares represents the violent and physical untamed aspect of war. For this reason, the Greeks were ambivalent toward him because of his dangerous, overwhelming force in battle. He was loved neither by the gods nor by men, except for Aphrodite who was his lover despite she was married with Hephaestus. This adulterous affair was well known among the Olympians.
Ares’ main attributed was a peaked warrior’s helm. The god’s other attributes include a shield, a spear, and a sword. Ares was usually dressed as a standard Greek warrior with a short tunic, breastplate, helm, and greaves. Other times he was nude except for the helm and shield.
Are’s sacred animal was a serpent. Also, he was associated with certain birds, such as vulture and an owl which was often identified as portents of war, sedition, and ill- fortune. He was the most unpopular god of all the Olympians gods due to his temper, aggressiveness, and loved conflict. He was famous for seducing Aphrodite, fought Hercules, and killed Poseidon’s son. Also, he was wounded in battle by Diomedes and Zeus calls him “the most hated god”.

- Ares isn’t seen much in mythologic stories, but when he’s being humiliated

I learned that Mythology for the Greeks is like the bibles for the Christians, they believed that the Gods were real. Mythical Gods were inspiration for the arts in paintings and poetry. About Ares, son of Zeus and Hera; that he was dangerous with an overwhelming force and was insatiable in battles. Also, that he was not liked among the gods and nor the mortals and for this reason he was not worship. Ares was also a disloyal god due that his lover Aphrodite was married.
