George Orwell’s book Animal Farm talks about events that happened in the russian revolution written in a fairytale novella and makes the scale smaller by using farms instead of countries.Animal was published on the 17th of August 1945.The events that happened in the book signifies real events that happened during the Russian Revolution.
The idea of having complete control over people or a situation empowers people and gives them control over everyone. Power is used in Animal Farm to influence people’s behaviour or decisions and manipulate situations.In the quote “Squealer, temporarily stunned was sprawling beside it and near at the hand there lay a lantern , a paintbrush and an overturned pot of white paint”. Imagery is used to creature the scene of Squealer changing the commandment “No animal shall drink alcohol” to “ No animal shall drink alcohol to excess”. This quote is a very good example of how power corrupts and leads to justification of it , which is actually worse than the corruption itself.
This commandment was without the last two words when it was created , however when the pigs become so powerful no one dares to challenge their authority they added the last two words to the existing commandment that prohibits the drinking of alcohol to excess, which means they can drink if they think it’s good for them.Orwell’s language that he uses such as ‘natural’ and ‘superior’ to show how the pigs take control over the other animals and convince them that they are important in order for the farm to work in the quote “ The pigs did not actually work, but directed and supervised the others. With their superior knowledge it was natural that they should assume the leadership”.The way power is gained and used is shown in the quote “In April , Animal Farm was proclaimed a Republic and it became necessary to elect a president. There was only one candidate, Napoleon, who was elected unanimously”.

The election only had one candidate who was elected without the other animals having input. They didn’t get to vote or make any decisions, Napoleon took over and made all the decisions. In the end it turns out Animal Farm is more like a republic. Animal Farm is affected by power just how many countries are ruled and controlled by the government. By using propaganda and twisting language governments control us without our knowledge. The Animals represent the lower class while the pigs and humans are the higher class and will do anything to stay there and contain power.
