Greatly impact your life and the choices you make within it. They can also teach you a lesson or two at times. The question is, however, how can this really affect you? The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton focuses on cherishing loved ones and youth. While the characters are learning and growing up, there are many actions that impact them. They all have interesting actions and traits but the one I think sticks out the most is Darry. He goes through many stages from his dangerous and brutal past but also the tough present the author portrays. Through Darry´s caringness, toughness, and responsibility, he learns to be thankful for the thing around him and for the people he loves.

Darry can be described as caring for many reasons. One example is when Darry offered Pony some mushroom soup. On page 158, Hinton states ¨Darry said… How’d you like some mushroom soup?¨ This shows that Darry cares a lot about Ponyboy and wants to help and make him feel better soon. Another example of Darry´s caringness is when he finally saw Ponyboy and told him not to disappear or get hurt. According to the novel on page 98, it says ¨…he meant, Pony you scared me to death. Please be careful because I couldn’t stand it if anything happened to you.¨ Therefore he sees that Pony is very important and doesn’t want anything bad to happen to him. He doesn’t want him to ¨disappear¨. From these examples, it is clear the Darry loves and cares for Pony and his family very much.

Not only does Darry display his caring aspect, but he also proves to be tough. This is apparent when he yells at the reporters and stops them from badgering Pony. On page 100, S.E. Hinton states ¨Darrys kinda big.¨ This reveals Darryś struggle with how strong he his. Another example is when Darry decides to stand up for his friends and be the first one to start the rumble. On page 142, it says “Then Darry said, I’ll take anyone.¨ This means Darry was tough enough to know he could take on and defeat anyone. Readers can see that Darry is very strong and confident.

The final and most important description of Darry is responsibility. In one instance, he is concerned about Ponyboys awareness. In Chapter 6 (page 149), it says ¨Where the heck have you been?” In just a few words, Darry shows how he is responsible enough to make sure he knows where Pony is. In another scene, the author shows how mature Darry has become because of how much he had already been through for his family. Ponyboy states ¨and he had given up a lot for me and soda.” on page 176. All in all, he is very responsible for looking out for Soda and Pony. S.E. Hinton leaves readers with the definite impression that Darry cares very much about Soda and Pony, but also makes sure they are living their best life.

In the novel The Outsiders, Darry has learned the importance of love and family through the actions motivated by his traits. He has also changed over time throughout the book. His caringness pushed him to love more, his toughness taught him to stand up for the people he loves, and his responsibility taught him to look out for Ponyboy and Soda. Overall I think Darry has changed for the better and his characteristics have taught him very many things.
