Hunger Game is one of the popular hollywood movie that many people enjoy watching, but is it really just a fiction movie that everyone had been talking about? The answer is no. The movie Hunger Game has a lot of meaningful scene and the whole political story in it. It shows the failed of the government and the act of communism. Many of the article might be compare the Hunger Game with the United States of America since the Penam geography is located in the North American. However, I will be contrasting the different between the US Constitution to the movie Hunger Game. Some might ask why do you choose to contrast the Hunger Game with the US Constitution? The answer is because there are many US Constitution that it is important for a country to have and Panem (The country in the movie) is one of the country that set a good example of the causes of failing the US Constitution.
This is why I believe that Penam should adapt the US Constitution to its country which might improve the country itself and the living condition of its people. If we are going to compare the US Constitution to the Hunger Game we can not miss talking about how the US Constitution created. According to the National Center for Constitutional Studies, the Constitution started and held at the City of New-York, on Wednesday the fourth of March, 1789. The country is ruled by tyrannical dictatorship and the leader’s name is President Snow which later was assassinated. There are 12 districts and the Capitol is the main city of the country. In each of the 12 districts are advised what to create, and the people of those regions are doled out to work in those enterprises. Each region has a claim to fame: for instance, coal mining in District 12, gadgets creation in District 3, and angling in District 4. In Panem, an imperative piece of monetary opportunity is missing: the privilege to work in the activity you pick.
Basically, if you were born on the district 12 you cannot choose to work on other thing except mining. It also limited you to across the district so you can not communicate with other districts. According to both the book and the movie, there used to be 13 districts. However, 74 years before the story was taken place, the 13th district was destroyed due to their first rebellion. The Game called Hunger Game was also created for the punishment of the rebellion from the district 13. Every year, each district will have to send one girl and boy age lower than 28 to the capitol to fight and the district that win will be awarded by tons of food for the whole year.
According to the book by Suzanne Collins, the main character name Katniss Everdeen said, “Say you are poor and starving as we were. You can opt to add your name more times in exchange for tesserae. Each tessera is worth a meager year’s supply of grain and oil for one person. You may do this for each of your family members as well. So, at the age of twelve, I had my name entered four times. Once, because I had to, and three times for tesserae for grain and oil for myself, Prim, and my mother”(Page.13). Because there is no government support for poor people, it forces the kid from poor family to put more name into the game which causes higher risk to get pick to be in the Hunger Game. This shows that Panem is a lot different from the United States in many ways even the history of the country.
Started with the first Amendment which according to the National Center for Constitutional Studies , states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances”(Jeremy, Par.3). This means that the citizens should have freedom of speech, religion, and press. Right from the history of how the Hunger Game created, you can tell that the citizens in Penam can not speak up against the government. Because if any other district will speak up or do any kind of rebellion, they will end up getting destroyed just like the district 13.
Also, there are scene in the movie where one old man pressed his three finger on his mouth then later he put it up to the sky while whistling. After he did that, he got into the trouble and was taken by the peacekeeper. This action makes the people scared to do or say anything because if they do the peacekeeper, which seen as a military, will punish them. Due to the fact that the citizens does not have the right of speech, it shows the lack of the first amendment of the Bill of Rights that the United States gives the its citizens. The second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is the right to bear arms. According to the National Center for Constitutional Studies , the Constitution states, “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” (Jeremy, Par. 2).
Citizens of Panem can not carry or own weapons where and told by katniss in the book when she crosses the fence to hunt with Gale. This restriction causes Katniss to never takes her bow and bolts with her inside the District 12, yet abandons them covered up inside a trunk. This rule was created by the government to stop the citizens from rebellion. Because the peacekeeper has weapons, they can attack the citizens whenever which caused the citizens to be afraid of the consequence they will get if they started to rebel. This rule is against the U.S. Constitution.
Because the U.S. Constitution was created to keep the government not to over control the government by giving right for the citizens to bear arms, the citizens can fight back the government whenever they think the government are over controlling them. On the fourth amendment according to the National Center for Constitutional Studies states that “ The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched and the person or things to be seized” (Jeremy, Par. 6).
The reasons that Panem and its government failed on this Constitution is because there were the bird call Jabberjays were created to spy on the citizens as said in the book. Also from the presentation by Tini Turano, states that President Snow somehow knows about the kiss between Katniss and Gale. From the information, the government has an eyes everywhere which does not give the right of privacy to the citizens. Unlike the Constitution of the United States of American, the government in Panem does not give the right of privacy to the citizens. They have eyes on everywhere and everything.
In the Amendments 5th, 7th and 8th of the U.S. Constitution are basically similar to each other which basically states that people should have the right to civil the case and not get the punishment right away. Also, it states that the citizens should be able to get a fair trial. From the movie, there is the part where Gale got whip because he was caught getting out of the district to hunt turkey. Without having a trial, Gale got beaten up by the peacekeeper. This is an act of unconstitutional if it happens in the United States. However, in Hunger Games is in acceptable to use the violence against the citizens right away.
“What do you think about choices your government past and present or other governments around the world make?” is one of the question Suzanne Collins, the author of the Hunger Game book, wanted the reader to think of in one of her interview with I Read Ya channel on youtube. In every country, there are government or the people who rule the country. Each of the country has different regulation and constitution which might be better than others. However, Panem rules are a lot harsher than other countries which gives no freedom to the citizens. This is why Penam should apply the constitution of the United States of America to its country.
