Aging: In the short story Cyclops, Sedaris’ father tells him about stories from “his childhood”… But, David Sedaris soon finds out that all the stories were a lie and his father was just trying to teach his children to be careful in life. The children did learn how to be vigilant, however, they grew up filled with fear. This caused David to grow up in a manner that led him to live life without risk. For example, in this story Cyclops, the father told him a story about what happened when a friend of his mowed his lawn. Apparently, the lawnmower cut off the friends foot and then David started imagining this happening. Being completely traumatized by this story of a lawnmower, David doesn’t want anything to do with one. But now that he’s older, he understands why his father did and said the things he did. Family: Another story by this author was Let It Snow by David Sedaris, which made you scared to read the rest but you still wanted to… He spoke about a mother who was hiding a secret of drinking so early while the children are usually in school.
But, this day the kids had a snow day and were home to find out this secret. The kids end up getting kicked out of the house and the mother wouldn’t let them back in. On the end of page 18 to the beginning of page 19, it’s told how the young sister would do anything for anyone she was so sweet. The kids figured that if someone got killed, the mother would care which is sad that they think this. But knowing Sedaris’ humorous style of writing, he throws in that at least they’ll be more room for the other if the sister got run over by the car. The theme of family ties is always important to Sedaris. His siblings are some of the primary characters in the book. Their stories, imperfections, and interactions fill the pages and often make Sedaris frustrated but he always comes around to understanding that this is his family and he wouldn’t want it any other way.
Sedaris’ use of humor and dramatic tone creates a tempting story you can’t help but read. In all of his stories there’s a warped plot to it that he somehow makes you giggle. He uses particular choices of tone to express his stories. David Sedaris is a humorous master at satire writing. If you don’t know what a satire writer is, it’s when the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or mockery to expose and criticize people’s stupidity, particularly in the context of current politics and other topical issues. That is what exactly describes David Sedaris and his writing style.
In conclusion, Sedaris’ stories are told in a humorous way to simmer down the difficulties in his life. His warped insightful observations about his family, becoming the person he is, and everything else along the way such as his accomplishments… make David Sedaris’ him.
