Over the ages of human’s constant change and adaptation to the different environments, games have been used by man for leisure, exercise and even as full-time careers. In fact, human also introduced gaming to both domestic and wild animals. There are many games that are well known all over the world while others remain within households, countries or individual continents. However, the majority of the games are known and celebrated all over the world through organized competitions that attract participants from all over the globe. As much as there are several differences and technicalities in the games, football and basketball are two celebrated games around the globe. Both games have similarities and differences as explored in this essay.
Similarities
Many schools of thought may give different similarities between the two games but all schools agree on four main similarities. Firstly, both of these sports are played by teams competing for a win. Football consists of eleven players on both sides while basketball comprises of five players on each playing sides. Additionally, as much as there are time slot differences, in both teals, there are allowances given to both teams to replace weak or injured players as the coach pleases.
In both games, only a single ball is allowed to be in the field at one time unless there are pre-match or post-match practices. In both games, the team members have specific roles that they play, for example, there are defenders, and strikers or shooting guards in football and basketball respectively. All players, however, have an equal opportunity to score and make their team remain ahead of the competitors.
Differences
As much as both games have similarities, there are a few conventional differences. The first difference is that, in football, the leg is the main body part allowed in dribbling or passing the ball. The shoulder, head, and chest are also allowed in football but the hand is only used during free throw when the ball gets out of the pitch or when placing the ball on the spot when having a free kick. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to use the hands to keep the ball from going into the net, though the keeper is also restricted during special conditions. In basketball only the hand is allowed in the dribbling, shooting and passing the ball because using the leg is a fowl.
Another difference is the nature of the place where each of the games is played. As much as there are few people who enjoy playing basketball in the open, it is an indoor game played on wooden or cemented surface. On the other end, football is meant to be an outdoor game played on green grass surface but may occasionally be played indoors as well. There is also a difference in field size in that the basketball court is smaller compared to the football pitch. A difference between the time intervals also exists and the rules also differ between the two games.
Conclusion
In conclusion, As much as there are several differences and technicalities in the games, football and basketball are two celebrated games around the globe. Both games entertain and allow players to explore their greatest potential while exercising as well. The two games remain popular around the globe because of the values that sportspeople gain from playing both games within the friendly zones in the compounds or outside the geographic location.
