“But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.”-George Orwell. This quotation elaborate and focus to the specific crisis in the book entitled “Animal Farm,” Mr. Orwell made himself, he showed us, his readers, how language is being used and misuse. Over time in the story where pigs start ruling the manor farm, and who claim to be the cleverest, starts to abuse the power of the ways language are being used. The antagonist, Napoleon, uses the tactics of manipulation and fear to satisfy his own grideness to take over the farm and he lead the farm by dictatorship. In conclusion, the antagonist abuse how the language works and to be able to get a firm hold with the power and his position.

Fear

Napoleon uses the weakness of the animals, fear, to maintain his superiority inside the farm, and it helps him to take control over all of the animals. To make the animals fear him, there are a bunch of scare tactics that Napoleon planned thoroughly. For example, rearing nine dogs. Napoleon adapts and reared the nine puppies and they played the role by serve as Napoleon’s own bodyguard.”nine enourmous dogs wearing brass-studded collars came bounding into the barn. They dashed straight for Snowball, who sprang from his placejust in time to escape” (p.35). Therefore after seeing the dogs chased Snowball and the physical apperance of the dogs “Though not yet full-grown they were huge dogs, and as fierce-looking as wolves”(p.36), no one would dare to brave and fight with Napoleon as the dogs are always around him In addition, he uses the dogs to do the act of killing those animals who opposed him.

As the months passed there are some animals who attempt rebellion, thereafter, many animals confessed and stating that Snowball orderes them to disobey Napoleon’s order. “the tale of confessions and executions went on, until there was a pile of corpes are lying before napoleon’s feet and the air was heavy with the smell of blood”(p.57). Does the act of killing their comrade are based on if they confessed that they are on league with snowball. Also, Since all animals are afraid of Mr. Jones coming back, squealer mention “comrades, you do not want Jones back?”(p.37). In conclusion, Napoleon scare the animals by showing how powerful he was. “The remaining animals, except for the pigs and dogs, crept away in a body. They were shaken and miserable”(p.57). The quotation states that all the dogs that was reared by Napoleon and did the execution and it leaves a big impact to the animals, to not disobey him in the future. Also the saying “Comrade Napoleon is always right” starts to exist.

Manipulation

“How can you believe in lie, if there is a lie in believe”-anonymous. Brainwashing everyone’s mind to cover all the truth with lies and squealer said “tactics, comrade, tactics”(p.39). Napoleon who can change the rules. The type of brainwashing Napoleon did was using his other pig comrade, Minimus, whose good at creating songs and poems. For example, Napoleon used Minimus to create a propaganda songs and poems.“Beast of the England” changed into “Animal Farm” by by squealer’s good reasoning, “‘Beast of England’ was the song of the Rebellion. But the Rebellion is now compleated.”(p.59) therefore it is no longer needed.

Also the poem ‘Comrade Napoleon’ states that every animal would be living a glamorous life if they sided to Napoleon but it truly means that it doesn’t represent any freedom at all instead slavery, specially the second stanza the last second line ‘though watchest over all’ it is more like threatening that they all should be aware of their action. In addition, Squealer is the spokesperson of Napoleon, he is a brilliant talker, he spreads false information around the farm. “That evening Squealer explained privately to the other animals” (p.38), such as explaining: Snowball is Mr. Jones secret agent, stealing Napoleon’s windmill idea, and destroying the windmill. Squealer easily manage to make the animals believe him because the other animal are not as brilliant as the pigs, therefore, in the animal’s mind that Snowball represents evil according to Napoleon because he is a traitor. In addition, Since pigs were generally recognised as being the cleverest of the animal”(p.9) and “the milk and the windfall apples should be reserved for the pigs alone”(p.23). Their priority is to make all the pigs healthy and that is the start where equality between animals. In the ‘7 commandments’ states that all animals are equal, however, it change to ‘all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others’.

Another example, “the big barn, where the Seven Commandments were written, a ladder broken into pieces. Squaler, temporarily stunned, was sprawling beside it, qand near at hand there lay a lantern, a paintbrush and overturned pot of white paint.”(p.73). Int this statement states that Squaler is the one who keeps adding the words in the ‘seven commandments’ to cover all the lies of Napoleon. In conclusion, brainwashing and twisting words are the pig’s tactics to manipulate the animals to work for them.

In conclusion, Misusing the language by corrupting everyone’s thoughts. Language has the power to overturn things around. Napoleon uses tactics to get a hold over the animal farm. Twisting the words is also covering all the truths by a lie. Napoleon uses Minimus and Squaeler as his tools to manipulate the animals. Also he uses the dogs he reared to form fear or terror to the animals.
