Ancient Greece civilization has many remarkable qualities. When looking at their culture, we see many similarities to our American society today. Some of which include our government, architecture, and art. There are many more similarities, but these are a few I will focus on. I have come to realize just how much American society and Ancient Greece intertwine.
When it comes to the American Government, just like the Greeks, we have a Democracy. We allow the people to vote in elected officials who represent us. Also, Americans have a Constitution, which was first implemented by the Greeks. It gives us a common standard of how people should behave and what rules they should follow. The U.S. Constitution acts as the supreme law of the country and establishes individual citizens’ rights. Some of those rights include free speech, right to bear arms, and trial by a jury of your peers(Wilde).
Greek architecture can be viewed in many American buildings. Most of them are located in Washington, D.C. some examples include The United States Capitol, The Supreme Court Building, and The Lincoln Memorial, all these buildings have tall columns and beautiful designs that replicate Greek architecture(Chrysopoulos).
The Greeks are very artistic; one of the ways they expressed their love for the Gods, and other distinguished citizens is through sculpture. If you look around today, you can see many sculptures in America. Mainly essential people in our history, such as presidents and high-ranking officials in the military. Some of the well-known sculptures of America include Mount Rushmore and The Statue of Liberty.
American Society is diverse in many ways, not only from the many different cultures that reside in our beautiful country but also from Ancient Greece. As you can see, many things from their customs are still alive in America today. From our government and the way, we elect officials to how we show appreciation for important things and people in our history. Ancient Greece still impacts our daily lives, and I think it will for centuries to come.
