Considering a creature, as a meal sounds terrible when it first hits our ears, but the meal is still enjoyable as it touches our tonguei There is always a voice in ones conscience telling you that you are hurting the animal that you are calling “dinner”. Today’s society should be advanced enough to learn proper treatment of an animal even if the energy it provides is needed to survive. Yet, past all of the articles, documentaries, and side-of-the-road activists we see and have entertained, we are still ignorant to plain and simple facts and beyond the hour or two we spend dwelling on these things, we go back to caring not about the animal, but rather the taste A change can only start with one generation, and why not ours, There will be no change in the near future due to the successful marketing of events like the Maine Lobster Festivali Marketing and advertising will contribute to a future of terrible eating habits and continued torture of innocent creatures Marketing and advertising is a major reason why a large amount people eat the way that they do.

The Maine Lobster Festival was advertised extraordinarily well to the public David Foster Wallace says, “Total paid attendance was over 100,000, due partly to national CNN spot in June during which a senior editor of Food and Mne magazine hailed the MLF as one of the best food themed galas in the world” (498), CNN, a major news network, which millions of people tune into daily, advertised to over 100,000 people and convinced them to make their presence, to sit and stand in the heat, and to “try” lobster. If the lobster festival was marketed in a different way, saying “We are gruesomely boiling alive lobsters and shoving endless amounts of fried foods, butter, and cholesterol down your throats, come and join!” no one would go merely because it sounds vulgar, It is similar to saying, “come by to grill up some cow”, instead of inviting someone to come to a barbeque.

The Maine Lobster Festival provides “lobster T—shirts and lobster bobble head dolls and inflatable lobster pool toys” (Wallace 498). These accommodations and complimentary toys give a positive outlook for children to join the festival and have a great time, as well as nudge and annoy their parents to purchase each and every bit of lobster merchandise, As a country we will never stop eating innocent creatures simply because we are passing on the thoughts of these type of events as great memories to children, not massive tragedies. Furthermore, there are other types of advertisement: negative ones Many of us get teary-eyed when the sad music and depressing voice of the narrator during the seemingly hour long People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal (more famously known as PETA) commercials. lf PETA had enough backbone to market themselves into the lives of parents and children, other than disturbing commercials, then these types of events would have a much harder time striving or even existing The Maine Lobster Festival has “pamphlets at the festival that [emphasize] that lobster meat has fewer calories, less cholesterol, and saturated fat [than most meats]”

This makes middle-aged men and women attracted to the festival because many are looking to lower their cholesterol and are entering a time in their life where being healthy is a necessity in order to avoid all of the maintenance drugs. PETA tries to get involved and boycott the Maine Lobster Festival but it never turns out in their favor because of how the Maine Lobster Festival has prospered over the years. They fail because they hire “celebrity spokesmen like Mary Tyler Moore for open letters and ads saying stuff like ‘Lobsters are sensitive (Wallace 503). There are no facts stating that “Lobsters are sensitive” or that their nervous system allows them to feel pain, The Maine Lobster festival also has more of a welcoming and mellow feel when they advertise it with a family oriented matter. PETA tries to advertise with boring and unproven facts about lobsters that lack what it takes to draw people in.

People like entertainment, not unproven facts that will upset their children The PETA organization is trying to prove itself without proper advertising, David Foster Wallace states in his writing that “ I’m not trying to give you a PETA-like screed here — at least I don‘t think so” (509), Wallace kind of states in that paragraph that he does not want to come of as giving you a lecture on lobsters, because that is what PETA tries to pull off. That is why as a country we will not be able to control the way people feast on helpless creatures PETA in other words is falling behind and pushing people away with depressing, and miscellaneous facts that people in general do not want to hear. Companies that produce beef or chicken nuggets put a happy cow or a happy figure on the packaging to have people buy their products, That is exactly what the Maine Lobster Festival is doing they are having Lobster mascots come to their festival, making it seem like the service and food they are providing are great and will produce feelings of happiness.

PETA on the other hand uses negative notions that are very unattractive to the hungry eyes entering the gates of the Maine Lobster Festival. To engage people, PETA needs to step up its marketing skills so that they can convince people and children that if we stop the excessive eating and over catching of lobster then we will have cleaner oceans and “happier” ecosystems, By now most of the country eats some type of meat, so negative publicity of the animal’s pain will not do us any good because only a small percent of people believe in it. Since there are no foundations that are will market and advertise other reasons why we should not be slaughtering animals, then none of our eating habits will ever change. It is more important to teach people moderation than to deprive people of the things that they already love and have seen as normal all of their lives.

Marketing and advertising has the ability to change the world we live in, It is known that Americans spend on food and beverages in the United States due to outstanding advertising Americans tend to fall into advertisements no matter how deceiving. Americans often lack the motivation to do any kind of research on health, benefits, and the effects of our choices The marketing needs steer toward healthier habits and convince more people to be in favor of ethical treatment of animals. Especially the marketing of PETA has to steer toward happiness, instead of dire boredom that pushes the eyes and ears of the consumer away, We could lean more about organic eating and scold festivals, like the Maine Lobster Festival, that mistreat and abuse animals infamouslyi The United States in general has to provide information to the public to show people the truth about the advertisements, and certain products
