For a person who has been going to zoos my own life I can understand the difference between a healthy clean zoo and a run down zoo. I have gone to Alaska and seen live bears battling for salmon, i have been to canada and have seen the breathe coming out of the nostrils of a colossal moose. Everybody might not be able to experience such things, people who live in large cities might be limited to pigeons and foxes but the way for them to experience the smell, sight, and absolute beauty of these animals are zoos. Zoos that watch over animals that could not survive in the wild with great care, the modern zoo acts as a place for the preservation of endangered species, a safe house for rescued animals.
Zoos that educate and discuss the way these animals survive, express their emotions, and interact with others of their kinds. Zoos There are 10,000 zoos around the world, as of November 24, 2017 there are 500 zoological facilities in the country- a number which includes both zoos and aquariums. Zoos hold their value making 22.5 million for the U.S. economy in 2016(Irimia R.) and Supporting over 208,000 jobs in the U.S.(Irimia R.). Zoos and aquariums generate significant economic benefits locally, regionally, and nationally.
The money zoos and aquariums spend for operations and maintenance generate powerful benefits for their host jurisdictions. Furthermore, there’s one aspect of the zoo economy that makes zoos different from other businesses. Zoos don’t buy or sell animals, they only trade them. Which may seem odd owning a collection of rare species that you can’t sell or buy. The pricing for visitation depends on the animals that are kept at the zoo or aquarium and the money that they put in to their animals enclosures. But overall most of the money that a person pays for admission is going into food, and supplies for the animals.
Funding research and contributing to proper care. Zoos are not just there for the pleasure of the public, they help with the breeding of endangered species. For example, The Bronx Zoo in New York, led one of the earliest captive breeding. Zoos help ensure endangered species don’t become extinct. We care for and provide aid to the animals who have been wiped out or reduced to small numbers in the wild. We store genetic materials, such as sperm and eggs to produce offspring. More than 35 species have gone extinct in the wild but exist again in their native regions because of zoos and their captive breeding programs.
Like the Red Wolf and Wyoming Toads which are just a couple of the species that zoos have helped bring back. Under human influence more species have become endangered in the 20th century than any other time. In 2014 The International Union of The Conservation of Nature reported more than 22,000 species at risk of extinct. We cut down the forest that threaten Masacadgar’s Lemars, we kill the Rhinos for their horns.
Zoos might not be the perfect solution but watching species continue to disappear is not the right either. Maybe the next generation will be more equipped to deal with the problem. For right now zoos is our best chance to help our furry friends that we share this beautiful planet with.
