William Shakespeare is most definitely one of the greatest poets and playwrights to ever live. Even though it has been hundreds of years, his work still continues to be distributed and read across the globe. His amazing stories about romance and tragedies continue to capture people’s hearts. As well as the reading, many people have been inspired to make books based off his stories and some even make movies. He is truly one of the best.
Shakespeare’s childhood was interesting to say the least. Shakespeare was born around April 23, 1564 in Stratford-Upon-Avon. We know this due to the fact that there are church records confirming he was baptized on April 26, 1564. Though, it is not known if that is his actual birth date. He was born to the couple John and Mary Shakespeare, along with five other siblings. Anne, whom died at the age of seven, Joan, Gilbert, Edmund, and Richard. Shakespeare was the oldest of the bunch. Since his family was middle class, it is safe to assume that he went to Stratford’s grammar school, where he learned latin, writing, acting, and memorization (https:www.folger.edu/shakespeares-life).
Shakespeare grew up and married Anne Hathaway at the age of eighteen. Anne was twenty-six and pregnant when they married. They had their first child, Susanna, on May 26, 1583. A few years later on February 2, 1585, Anne gave birth to the twins, Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet tragically died of unknown causes at the age of eleven (https://www.biography.com/people/william-shakespeare-9480323). Shakespeare had four grandchildren, whom all sadly died without children of their own. Shakespeare worked in London in the English theater (https:www.folger.edu/shakespeares-life). During his life, he wrote thirty-seven plays, all of which a mix of different genres. These genres include histories, comedies, tragicomedies, and tragedies (https://www.biography.com/people/william-shakespeare-9480323). We know that he started acting himself in 1592, but we do not know when exactly he performed. Although the theater was his passion, his poetry is what earned him the attention. Theater was not very accepted back then (Helen and Lior, Prezi.com). There is a period in time called the “Lost Years”, where nothing was recorded about Shakespeare. However, it is known that he wrote about nineteen plays during this period.
Some of his most famous plays include “Romeo and Juliet”, “The Taming of the Shrew”, and Othello”. Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616 at the age of fifty-two. If one were to visit his gravestone, they would find a somewhat chilling mesage.
