The underlining theme of the movie Supersize Me is how fast food is to blame for Americans being fat and/or obese. However, this was demonstrated under extreme conditions. Morgan Spurlock had to eat McDonald’s 30 days in a row for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He was also limited to the number of steps he could take in a day. Of course, by the end of the thirty-day trial period, he was experiencing many illnesses that could have been life threating had he continued the regimen.
Nonetheless, the movie Supersize Me is not realistic. He could order whatever he wanted, but when he was asked to supersize he was only allowed one answer, and that was yes. When comparing Spurlock’s situation to real circumstances, the population suffering from obesity is ironically the poor and not the rich. Though rich people may not choose to eat McDonald’s, the poor will not continuously choose to super-size their meal.
Fast food was created for one intentional purpose only, convenience. Many people normally go to a drive through because it is faster than preparing a home-cooked meal. Being faster than a home cooked meal also means the food is generally eatable, not healthy. In the United States today, it seems that both parents provide the financial stability of the household. This means there is less time for meal preparation.
If one parent or both parents are working late or have something come up it is much easier for them to head to the drive through on their way home instead of coming home and cooking for another hour before dinner is even ready. We should also keep in mind that many fast food menus display the calorie intake as well as carbohydrates for each item. This means that the customer can clearly see the nutritional value of their food, and make a decision as to how they would like to proceed with their meal.
Fast food is always an unhealthy option, but with this being said, this does not mean that every single meal a family eats come from a drive-through window. Many people also cannot afford to eat out every single meal, let alone supersize every single one of their meals. We have to look at the bigger picture. Yes, fast food help contributes to obesity, but what about the at home lifestyle. You can easily go home and only eat junk food or you have the option to cook a much healthier meal.
