Selena Quintanilla was a very inspirational singer to people all around the world. She had a great childhood which launched her career. She was a Latina that stayed humble even when she became famous. She never got to have kids or live a long life. Selena once said “If you’re gonna be somebody, you need to be a leader not a follower… Be strong minded. The impossible is always possible.”

Selena was always able to speak English, but most of her songs were in Spanish. She was working on her English album before she was killed. One of her most popular songs was Como La Flor. This song was meant for her ex boyfriend, but she did never said who it was. She was hurt in this song because her ex had found a new love.

Selena’s song I Could Fall in Love and Dreaming of You were two of her most popular songs in English. Selena dedicated those songs to her husband, Chris Perez. They were together for about three years before Selena was murdered. They would even talk about having kids one day, but she never got the chance to ever live a her life to the fullest. She did achieve most of her goals in life which was to get to the top of the boards with her music.

Selena’s parents were Abraham Jr. and Marcella Quintanilla. Abraham was born and raised in Corpus Christi, TX. When the two met, Abraham was serving the military and was based in Tacoma, Washington. The two got married in 1963 after dating for a few years since they first met in 1961. Her father had led a band in the 1950s and 1960s that played early rock and roll songs mixed with traditional Mexican music. This music, later called Tejano music, had become very popular throughout the southwest United States and Mexico. Abraham eventually gave up his music career to start a family.

Selena was the youngest of the three Quintanilla children. When she was six years old, her father saw her talent. He was teaching her older brother, Abraham III, to play guitar when Selena began to sing. The children formed a family band. They practiced almost every day. Her father was a former Mexican-American musician who formed a band ‘Selena y Los Dinos’. Selena used to be the lead vocal and her two siblings played guitar and drums.

Selena opened her very own boutique in San Antonio, Texas around the same time the main building for her clothing line was complete, both were equipped with in-house beauty salons. Selena began preparing clothing along with designer Martin Gomez with designs and styles of Latin American texture and unique clothing styles which became her trademark on stage. Hispanic Business magazine reported that the singer earned over $5 million from these boutiques. Another boutique was due to open in Monterrey, Mexico in 1995, but due to Selena’s murder it was not opened. The San Antonio boutique was closed a while later after 1999. After Selena’s death, Chris Pérez, Selena’s widower, began taking over the business. After the 16th anniversary of the opening of the Corpus Christi boutique, the store was officially closed as of July 2009. Her fashion and sense of style are seen on several celebrities today

A speculation about Selena was that she never let fame or money go to her head. Despite the fact that Selena and her family were worth an estimated $5 million, according to people magazine, most of them continued to live in three adjoining houses in the same lower-middle-class neighborhood of Corpus Christi. She is also seen as a role model. Her rising fame didn’t stop her from shopping at her local Wal-mart and Pay Less Shoes. Selena was known to be an artist who never wanted to let her fans down. Regardless of how busy she was, she always made time for her fans.

Despite that Selena was an American born Mexicana, she began her career in the Spanish-speaking music industry in a specific genre, Tex-Mex. She was famously known for adding her own twist to Tex-Mex, attracting Latino communities throughout the United States to her music. Her music shined a new light on the huge Latino consumer market, one that had not really been there before.

Selena crossed into the English-market in music, many don’t know that English was indeed her first language. Selena learned the lyrics to her songs in Spanish through phonetics. With her great success in the Spanish-music industry, she realized that learning Spanish fluently was indeed something important to her. Within only a couple of years, the Mexican-American singer learned to speak Spanish fluently and began to do many interviews with Spanish programs on television and radio.

Selena Quintanilla made a huge impact on the world with her music. She made Tejano music a big deal in the United States. She never judged anyone for who they were and she will always be an inspiration to ladies all around the world. Selena always told her fans to love themselves, no matter what body type they had and no matter their appearance. Her songs are still popular to this day and Selena shall live on to be a legend with her music.
