Bioinformatics is a fast growing research area in Nigeria and the world at large because its vital role in the headway towards biological sciences. Over time, Bioinformatics is expected to become more popular for it is a prominent field of study that applies tools, techniques, and methodologies in computer and information science in taking care of biological problems. It is for this reason and my esteem regards for the value of education from a very young age that has driven me to pursue career in Bioinformatics. Ever since I discovered Bioinformatics during my third year at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), I have been dedicating a significant amount of time to it. I did a number of related courses at the university and also enrolled in a number of online courses.
My final year project at the university allowed me to apply AI concepts that I have always been intrigued about which is the development of an ant colony optimization technique for solving the vehicle routing problem using robots traversing. The project increased my motivation to deep dive into applying AI in Bioinformatics research. Recently, during my learning at the Google Africa Developer Scholarship (ALC 4.0) being under the Cloud Track, I was also much exposed to advanced capabilities giving me a more clarity and possibility of how the knowledge of AI can be applied in Bioinformatics, then I come to the realization of the potential that Bioinformatics has and how data mined through it is disrupting the medical industry. Therefore, I aspire to contribute to the development of Bioinformatics ecosystem. To achieve that, I believe that I need to extend my knowledge beyond the basic techniques, and that is where the specialization in this field which is offered by Ghent University would be pivotal. The evolution of gene families and genomics are courses that excite me most.
I believe studying abroad at Ghent University will be a monumental step in realizing my personal, academic, and career goals to my highest potential, conducting a Masters Studies and research with scholars would improve my knowledge and practical experience. Moreover, Belgium is one of the most globalized countries in the world according to the ranking of the Swiss Economic Institute and home to several top-ranked universities, so I can count on getting excellent academic and strong research training. I specifically select Ghent University because it offers best extensive and interesting courses that will complement my background study. With the research opportunities that the Bioinformatics Lab provides, I am positive that this path, while fulfilling my dreams and appetite for knowledge, will also enable me to contribute significantly to the Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Genomics group at Ghent.

After my graduation, I aim to continue the research and enrich myself in the same field to earn a Ph.D in Biotechnology research, before moving again to industry as an expert. Undoubtedly, the learning outcomes from Ghent will help me develop my professional career in becoming an expert in the field.
