The reason I have been selected as a candidate for the Person of the Millenium is due to the many accomplishments I have made throughout my life. One of my accomplishments is winning 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal in a single U.S. Olympics. Obviously, after the race was done, I was in a huge shock like I was in complete awe since I never knew my time for a distance would be a world record.
A girl who overcame polio had just set a world record and that girl was me! I was just so proud of myself and how far I have come since my childhood. “Oh my goodness” were the only words to describe the feeling I was feeling at that very moment and looking back, I still get shivers down my spine thinking about the moment I crossed the finish line.
Ever since I talked to a college track coach, I instantly fell in love with track and field just by hearing about it. This achievement helped me pave my road to success. Before I got interested in track and field, I started playing basketball at 11 years old with my brothers and sisters and before I knew it, I set a state record of 49 points in one basketball game which is my next accomplishment. It was a very surprising time for me when I found out I set a state record since I just got into basketball at the time too.
From the time I ever touched a basketball, I fell in love with the sport. I usually had to wear a brace on my left leg for better support in my leg to be able to participate in these activities since I had polio at 4 years old. A couple years later, I overcame polio but I had to wear a brace on my left leg for stability in my leg. This also showed people that you can achieve anything you put your mind to.
Lastly, another accomplishment of mine is forming my own organization, the Wilma Rudolph Foundation dedicated to promoting amateur athletics. I personally believe this is my greatest accomplishment since the foundation taught young men and women to be yourself and to have confidence in yourself. This foundation, in my opinion, has empowered me to try even harder just to show the young men and women that you can do anything if you try and triumph can’t be had without the struggle.
All of my accomplishments that I have mentioned are very key and important accomplishments that have helped me pursue my career and to be a candidate for the Person of the Millenium. I truly believe that I am a great candidate for the Person of the Millenium due to the work I have done and the key things I have accomplished.
