Servant Leadership is described as a leader that exhibits the behavior to serve those whom he is leading first. Furthermore, a servant leadership style can optimally be served for an online class. Hence, online learning is faced with many challenges in comparison to a traditional educational setting, such as distance, proximity, and connectivity. The instructor’s leadership behaviors can impact the students’ experience, engagement, and retention to the class (Sahawneh & Benuto, 2018). Also, the research revealed that the five vital individual characteristics in servant leadership are: 1. altruistic calling 2. emotional healing 3. wisdom 4. persuasive mapping & organizational leadership (Sahawneh & Benuto 2018). The study found that the most reliable indicators for outstanding instruction were wisdom.

A Study of Servant Leadership Practices and the Impact on English Language Learners in California Public Schools

Laney & Shanna asserts that California’s English Language Learners are growing at a rapid pace. Also, the gap between English Only Learners and English Language Learners is extensive. The purpose of their study was to identify leadership practices such as servant leadership is correlated to a higher percentage of English Language Learner achievement (Laney & Shanna 2018). Laney and Shanna’s study sample consisted of 82% female and 18% male that exhibited servant leadership characteristics. The result of their survey points out that administrators did not view English Language Learners as a top priority in the school. The majority of the school’s top priority was focused on discipline and behavior (Laney, & Shanna. 2018). Thus, the study did not show a correlation between servant leadership practices and the success of English Language Learners.
