Miss Representation is a nine-year-old American documentary film that was organized and developed by Jennifer Seibel Newsom. The movie immediately evaluates women’s hardship through their everyday lives of inequality in The United States of America. Through numerous interviews and different perspectives from influential women such as Jane Fonda, Racheal Maddow, and Katie Couric, the topic of women’s inequality began to formulate disputes and interest the attention of entire communities.

Various women were given the opportunity to tell their story and clarify why subjective intuition has made them passionate about improving women across the media. Newsom manipulates the film to improve social action movements through The Representation Project. The project was stimulated by the under-representation of women throughout the media. Within a present-day society, social media happens to be the reassuring factor that implements the true value of women. Newsom said, “we receive that women’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality and not in her capacity as a leader.” (Miss Representation Film, 20011)

In the continuous process of sociological change, Miss Representation is an excellent candidate in indicating the essence and miss understatement of women who have to constantly bargain with unfairness against men. For many years, women have been in a continual battle with men. Women have fought for rights, wealth, and privilege. It was only until 1923 when The National Women’s party was able to prcoess and amendement to “prohubit descrimination on basis of sex.” (History.com) However, gender stratification doesn’t end there.

Women have also been singled out of equal participation in the labor market, equal income as well as fairness in politics. Through various experiences within class and reading content, gender idealization is stated to be a macro-level idea for entire groups of society. Tying all of the information delivered by the film to a sociological context, the women in Miss Representation are upholding structural functionalism, symbolic interactionism as well as critical theory and are impacting the world of gender inequality.

Men and women are different. Even though there are numerous people who willingly battle for a fair opportunity against the world for both genders, the truth is that a man will always be different from a woman and that’s finalized. Through sex, gender, and sexuality a man is able to differ from a woman in technical terms. Sex is defined as ”biological differences, ” such as male and female parts. (Merriam-Webster)

The definition of sexuality is also quite simple, ”capacity of sexual emotion.” However, when dealing with the definition of gender, the simple idea of gender roles between a male and female, a female automatically comes into mind. Not only do gender standards specify heterosexual relationship dating rules but they perpetuate gender-specific demeanors that do more harm than good to people of both genders and their expectations.

For a large number of reasons, gender inequality has proven to be a very difficult topic that most people are unaware of. Without jumping the gun, all of the research that has been done to aid prove that gender inequality is actually not a result of male dominance but is the direct result of the influence of society. Throughout Miss Representation, the women are actively reflecting upon their lives as well as their present in order to be viewed as something apart from men.

Individuals with little understanding of gender inequality have looked into the issue in its entirety, they might believe that the problem is fairly simple. Irrespective of that, it is demonstrated that problems like those must be communicated. Despite the fact that there are individuals who swear that machismo is somehow a privilege, those arguments are unfounded and when people dig deeper into the rumors surrounding gender inequality it quickly becomes clear that the influence of society will dictate gender roles and expectations.

Lately, there has been a great deal about women who are now belittling men, even if the problem isn’t directly related to this particular generation. For that reason, certain opponents have argued that the issue should be approached with the same kind of laissez-faire attitude that worked with previous issues. Yet having said that, if the evidence is analyzed it becomes apparent that there are some caveats that should be acknowledged. While there definitely are some valid critiques, the evidence is simple, there will never be a mutual agreement, there will never be complete awareness, and genders can’t and will not be equal.
