What is a truly great leader? Is it someone with courage, discipline, creativity, remarkable achievements, and integrity? Unfortunately, Alexander the Great does not possess any of these traits to be called a “great” leader. Even though He left a mark in history, it was a mark that came with hundreds of thousands of deaths due to his bloodthirst for territory.
Alexander was born in 356 B.C.E in the kingdom of Macedonia, in northern Greece. His parents Phillip and Olympia, adored and spoiled Alexander. They hired One of the greatest Greek philosophers, Aristotle, to teach him academics, politics, sports, and warfare. His father passed. Alas he took the throne and set forth his quest to conquer the Persian Empire, what his father had failed to do years before.
Alexander “the Great” was a bloodthirsty maniac with a huge ego. He was conceded from a young age, and had absolutely no concern for others. For example, when Alexander and his army struggled to cross the hot, dry sand dessert, he could have taken them around instead of suffering. When a small group broke off in search of water, took their time in the sun, for when they returned he took the bit of water they found and dumped it into the sand. He forced his army to walk through harsh and deadly conditions, that they ended up turning against him.
He was treated like a king from a very young age which frew his ego. Every new place Alexander conquered he named after himself, Alexandria. In total, he named eleven cities after himself.

When someone attempted to stand up to Alexander, there were always consequences. For example the battle of Tyre, when they refused to surrender he did everything in his power to overtake them. He ordered his army to kill anyone that did not seek sanctuary in the temple, he saw this as a sign of retaliation. He sold any survivors into slavery and crucified 2 thousand innocent men. Once again due to his his huge ego and carelessness for others, hundreds of innocent people were brutally slaughtered. Alexander was nothing but a bloodthirsty, cold hearted murderer.
Alexander’s main goal was to conquer as much territory as he could. He was bloodthirsty. Alexander’s empire did not last long after his death. It took Alexander 10 years to build his empire but only a short amount of time for it to be destroyed. He desperately sought to conquer land that he failed to plan ahead and name an heir to the throne after he was gone. Because of his foolishness and ignorance toward his empire, there was no one to acquire it after his death, which caused the empire to collapse and crumble.
In conclusion, Alexander did have remarkable achievement such as building a vast empire in such a short amount of time. But it Collapsed faster than it was built. But that does not take away from the fact that he slaughtered hundreds of thousands of innocent people. He took more land than necessary, and put his army through harsh and fatal conditions. Alexander was a ruthless narcissist with a giant ego, a bloodthirsty maniac, and a cruel cold hearted murderer. He does not deserve the title of Alexander “The Great”.
