We sometimes wonder, “Why Study History?” History is made up of different people trying to make some sort of change, in our society. Harriet Tubman was a colored woman that helped slaves escape into freedom. The Bill of rights- 1st amendment, helped people gain their freedom. During the presidency of Lincoln, he made many changes that affected the lives of many people today. Harriet Tubman was a different type of woman, that went out to help colored people abandon slavery. She was born a slave herself and decided she didn’t want to live like that. One day she decided to escape. When she successfully made it, she decided she wanted to go back and help others. Harriet Tubman helped more than 100+ slaves, get a chance to experience freedom. She led them through dark forests and the underground railroad. If she hadn’t inspired people, then not as many people would’ve gotten that chance. The Bill of Rights was designed to give people a sense of freedom.
The 1st amendment is basically a person’s everyday rights. This includes freedom of speech, press, petition, and religion. Freedom of speech allows you to speak whatever you want. Press allows you to write/publish anything you would like in the newspaper. Religion lets you practice any religion you prefer. Petition is basically protesting, in something you think is right. Without these, the people of America would be a disaster. During the presidency of Lincoln, he tried making the U.S.A better place. He persuaded people that slavery wasn’t an option. He got more people to switch to the republican party. Sometimes that ended up being a terrible thing, because thats what got him killed. If it wasn’t for him though, people today wouldn’t have the courage to stand up for what they believe in. In conclusion, history is made up of different people trying to change society. Harriet, the Bill of Rights, and Aberaham Lincoln are only a few of the people and things that helped the U.S grow into what it is today, a democracy. A democracy that went through a lot of pain, struggle, and unforgettable memories, that is conjoined into history. So, when someone asks, “Why study History”, explain that, it’s the people like Lincoln that got you where you are today.
