Black history month to me means we have time to learn about African American people who have helped the black community get to where we are now. Weather it was from fighting slavery, going through civil rights, or till now. February is the month we embrace our culture and feel special about the people who helped African Americans with our rights as human beings. This is the only month of the year we talk and get a better understanding of our history. It’s a lot of people who did things for the black community but, we only learn about the main figures that made of big part of our history.
Back in the day it was hard for blacks to do anything. Living was a challenge to all depending on your skin color. So it was very powerful when blacks stood out trying to make a change, no matter what they did. From being the first black person to play a sport, go to school and get an education and even fight for our rights as African Americans. Black history month gives us a time to come together and learn new things we may not know about our history.
Going back two hundred years when slavery was in action, it was always somebody trying to make things equal or a change for our African American people. Harriet tubman made a way for more black to escape and nat turner did what he felt was right for his people. Fast forward to MLK who fought for African American Equal rights by peacefully marching and gathering thousands of people from all different types of races to come together. Malcome X speaking the truth trying to wake up our peers from what is really going on in this type of world we live in. With coming a long way to present day where we had our first back president of the United States of America, that brought us together as a nation.
February is the only month of the year, we talk about our history and get a better understanding. It’s also the only shortest month of the year, i dont think its a coincidence. The only thing I don’t understand is why so us African American people like myself only learn black history for only one month out of the twelve months of the year. Then after february we go back to learning the “American history”. Black history to me should be taught all year round to help wake up our peers, on our true history. They might be more interested and interact better with each other. Our ancestors didn’t do all this for us to learn one month of their history each year.
Black history month to me means it is time to come together and learn what our ancestors have completed for us to get to where we are now. The second month of the year is when we embrace our culture and feel special about ourselves. It doesn’t matter how long ago it was, all that matters is who helped us as a black community and we help their legacy carry on for however long we can. This is the only month out of the twelve that we get a better understanding of our history. We mostly learn about the main figures but it’s a lot of people that put in work that names will be known.
