Money plays a very important role in society. But, money is not everything, specifically love. Money can “buy” love and happiness but only to a certain extent. Having money fulfills the basic human needs in today’s society, but does not provide the sense of comfort real love gives to a couple.
Such as buying expensive gifts for somebody compared to giving somebody a gift that has a hidden meaning to it. In “The Great Gatsby”, Fitzgerald reveals that Gatsby attempts to use his newly earned money to win over Daisy and return to their love when they were younger.
Gatsby realizes that Daisy is very materialistic so he uses his money advantage as an attempt to impress her, which she later falls for. As they have an affair, Tom figures out and they compete over Daisy. Ultimately, Daisy chooses Tom over Gatsby because of love they had for each other, instead of Gatsby who could only offer her money. She and Tom had a family and memories that come with their marriage.
On the other hand, Gatsby could only offer his wealth. As Daisy realized, Gatsby wealth could not win compared to her experiences that came with her marriage with Tom. This example supports that money cannot buy people’s love.
