During this time period women were considered inferior to men, and given a stereotypical image of how to be a good wife, who puts everyone else before herself. They were rejected of any personal opinions or independence, for they started to believe they did not deserve those privileges. They were powerless compared to men and were conditioned to feel so by society. Social expectations tied female dependence on their husbands and families, they felt obligated to honor them before they honored themselves. In the story of the A Pair of Silk Stockings Mrs.Sommers finds these pair of silk stockings while on a run to do errands to find clothes for her child for a bargain, she buys them and proceeds to treat herself with other things and is really happy after doing so but Mrs. Sommers does not want to abandon her family, but she also does not want to abandon who she is to fulfill this role of being a women during that time to her family.

Women back then concentrated on the home and domesticity and that they were naturally suited to child care and to pleasing their families before themselves. In The Storm Alcée and Calixta both have these moment together were they basically cheat on their spouses but experience happiness through it , which it’s clear that they aren’t experiencing in their marriages but they still have to return back to their normal lives because they feel obligated to do so. During this period of time women wanted to be free and independent but become conditioned her husto accept there poistion in society and accepted it. They felt guilty when they didn’t live by these standards. Like in The story of an Hour Mrs. Mallard died in the end because of guilty she felt after she realized her husband wasn’t dead and that when she did think he was she felt free and was happy to be so. It wasn’t that she didn’t love her husband it just that she didn’t feel free within their relationship and with that over it meant she finally could have that freedom she desired

In developed western countries, women’s right and equality has improved vastly from a from how it was many years ago and women now have about equal rights as men and when it comes to participating in society in which ever way you choose to. Those equal rights however do not translate into equal opportunity for everyone and it’s as accessible. There is still things such as job discrimination and pay inequality between men and women in the world. While women are now making up the majority of the workforce, they are more likely to work in lower paying fields of work like community service, and education instead of higher leadership type fields of work. This also leads to the lack of women in leadership in the world. While there are more women earning degrees in careers than men, women are still underrepresented in leadership positions. Many women around the world are silenced and lack freedom compared to Western women do. They face inequality, and are the victims of physical or sexual violence which impacts 1 in 3 women worldwide and that’s something we fail to realize that even if we here have it better that doesn’t mean others do .
