Edgar Allan Poe was a great American author, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and murder. Poe went through a lot of trauma as a child. Poe is truly an inspiration.
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. He died in Baltimore, Maryland on October 7, 1847. Poe’s parents were actors, his dad was named David Poe Jr., his mother’s name was Eliza. He also had a brother and a sister named; William Henry Leonard Poe and Rosalie Mackenzie Poe. later in life married his younger cousin, Virginia Eliza Clemm.
In 1811, Edgar’s mother, Eliza was on a theatrical tour and died. Edgar was taken in by John and Frances Allan. They soon would move to England in 1815, and Poe would begin school in London at the age of five. In 1821, they would move back to Richmond where Poe would continue his school work. He starts to show a liking in Latin, poetry, acting, and swimming. In 1825, at the age of 16, he secretly becomes engaged to Sarah Elmira Royster.
Poe would soon excel into a school career at the University of Virginia. Poe showed a lot of academic growth in ancient and modern languages at Virginia, but also gained gambling debts. In 1827, Poe decided to leave the University of Virginia, to enlist in the U.S Army, by the name of Edgar A. Perry. In 1829, Poe would transfer to Fortress Monroe, back in Virginia. He would soon be promoted to Sergeant Major, but not long after Poe would discharge from the Army.
Later, Poe would go on to marry his little cousin. Originally, they met when Edgar was 20 and Virginia, his spouse, was only the age of seven. Over the years they fell in love and soon, Edgar would propose to his young cousin, Virginia, at the age of 13.
Edgar Allan Poe would soon move to Philadelphia in 1838, and begin his journey as a writer. Poe started writing novels and short stories, and began to love his work. Edgar was considered a mad man throughout his new neighborhood, and throughout his time as a writer. In February of 1841, Poe became the editor of Graham’s Magazine. In 1847, Virginia Clemm died on January 30, later that year Poe would fall ill, to probably a broken heart. In 1849 Poe would die to his illness and his stories, would be known all around the world.
