“Most dystopian, classic and contemporary, paints a future world that puts a twist on present society – a future world that could plausibly happen,”(Lauren DeStefano). Dystopian societies are the type of societies that many want to stay away from. This type of society is a society in which it is very unpleasant to live in and even inhumane. “The Hunger Games” series, written by Suzanne Collins, takes place in a dystopian society with Katniss Everdeen, a young girl who hunts with a friend, Gale, to help feed their families, and Peeta Mellark, a baker’s son her age, as the main characters. The genre of the three-part series is dystopian fiction. The first book, “The Hunger Games” shows the struggle and the bravery that these two had to go through to survive the cruel ways of their society. At the beginning of this three-part series, it starts with the description of their society.
There are 12 different districts are all under the control of the Capital, where the wealthiest live, and which an older man, Mr. Snow is in charge of. Each district is forced to have two individuals, a girl and a boy between the ages of 12-18 years old, to be apart of their annual televised Hunger Games, which was created as a form of punishment for district 13’s attempt to overthrow them. They are all put together to fight for their lives until there is only one victor. This is when in their yearly ceremony of choosing the tributes, the 16-year-old Katniss volunteers in the place of her younger sister, Primrose who is only 12 years old. Katniss and Peeta are the ones to be representing District 12 in the Hunger Games.
The Hunger Games is not something anyone should be excited about being a part of. After the tributes are chosen they begin to train for the Hunger Games. Katniss demonstrates her skill by using the bow and arrow, which is what she used to hunt and Peeta his surprising strength from lifting flour. They witness the lavish ways the people in Capital live their lives and the bright, colorful things they have; it is nothing like the poor districts. The citizens from the Capital are shown not to care about how the people from the districts are being treated. Once they are in the games, Katniss becomes friends with Rue, a younger girl who reminds her of her sister.

However, Rue is later killed in their plan to distract some of the more dangerous tributes. Then, after there is an announcement that the winners can be two people from the same district, Katniss goes off to find Peeta. She sees him injured and pretends she is in love with him, to get the audience from the Capital to donate them medicine. This plays well with them since Peeta had confessed to having feelings for her on an interview. This gets them to be one of the three last tributes still alive.
In the end, Katniss and Peeta are the only ones alive after Cato, one of the dangerous tributes is killed by an arrow of Katniss while he is being attacked by some form of creatures the game makers made out of the dead tributes. This leaves Katniss and Peeta the winners of that year’s Hunger Games. However, another announcement announces that now only one tribute can be the winner. In an attempt to have both of them survive, Katniss then comes up with the idea to pretend to eat some poisonous berries together. It works, and for the first time, there are two victors of the Hunger Games at the same time. She demonstrates how smart she is with her quick thinking. This act, however, did not please Mr. Snow because they had defied their rules. Their mentor who had helped them throughout the games warns them that they are in danger.
Peeta then finds out that Katniss had just been putting up in the act about loving him and is anger, but still agrees to keep it going to convince the public and be safe. Them being safe however will not last for they are to go through more of the Capital’s cruel ways. In this novel, Suzanne Collins includes not only the struggle to survive, like in other dystopian fictional novels, but also contains more personal information about the people in her book. She includes how poor the people in the districts were, the way they were treated by those in power, and how they felt. She makes the reader form a more profound connection towards the characters. By doing this she is able to make her readers more intrigued to what happens to the characters.
Collins does a great job at keeping her readers interested throughout her novel by including not only the previous reasons but by also giving fascinating descriptions to the way the people in the Capital lived. She makes the people who live in the Capital seem so oddly intriguing. From their funny looking hairstyles to their bright colored dressing apparel, it all just makes her writing so much more interesting. The way she describes the Capital’s lifestyle compared to the lifestyles in the districts makes the genre of dystopian fiction be more realistic in a way.
Knowing that dystopian societies aren’t the most pleasant, the differences Collin makes between them is more understandable. The first book of the three-part series catches the attention of readers. The way readers are able to get close to the characters and the fascinating descriptions of things are what makes novels phenomenal. This is what makes “The Hunger Games” a great dystopian fiction novel. The things that Collins includes in her writing would explain why this book and even the whole series became so popular.
