Hochschild is an american Sociologist that started the concept of feeling rules in her 1979 study of flight attendants. Feeling rules are shared rules that govern how we are supposed to feel in social relationships. We try to feel what we expected we should be feeling, we attempt to feel what we are supposed to feel. Appropriate emotion are shaped by who we are mostly with, what we are used to doing, the place we are and how we are supposed to feel given the context. Arlie Hochschild feeling rules are socially shared usual norms that impact how we want to try to feel emotions in given social interactions. All humans learn certain feeling rules, but they are different based on the culture/culturally imposed values like an American woman might be delighted that she gave birth to baby girl, while an Ethiopian woman might be upset not to have given birth to a boy because.

Boys are more stronger and provide for family according to the culture there are more like social class, for example, upper classes more booked when it comes to a lot of stuff than lower classes, relationships can be when feelings are expressed more openly with close friends than with co-workers, setting can be when an acceptable emotions at a college party are different from acceptable emotions at a cocktail party and gender is when a physical displays of emotion are more acceptable in females than in male. Feeling rules are usually highly flexible and their personal explanations can influences one’s personality. When a person sees the blaze of a police car’s light they have to stop the vehicle off the road without a question. Most drivers are most likely guess that the police officer that stopped them is a legal authority and has the authority to stop them if they did anything wrong.

It is the officers their official responsibility, the police officer can pull the driver over and punish the driver if the driver was driving faster than the speed limit. An office can not give the driver instruction to follow them to their house and demand them to clean their house then the driver can refuse to and also that the officer does not have the right/power to make a request for such thing like that. I am not generalizing all authority figures as police officers it can be an officials elected by the people or people who work with government and have authorities.Other authorities can come from unwritten laws like tradition and personal standards.

Sociologist Max Weber perceived this when he looked at every single actions and says that it connects with the authority also with the big organization of authority and how they are connect with the society’s economy. Following on this work, Max weber invented an organized system for authority. There is three types of authority. They are traditional authority, charismatic authority and legal authority. Legal authority is authority based on the fair administration of a state’s laws like nobody is above the law. Traditional authority is an authority based on progression over time like when someone dominates a country like queens and kings people just say we’ve been ruled by this dynasty for 20 years so why fix what ain’t broke. Charismatic authority is an authority based on the presence of the leader, which includes his personal characteristic such as heroism, special powers, inspirational qualities etc.
