The deputy curator said to The Daily Star that right now there is no Zoo act in Bangladesh but it will be passed very soon and legal actions can be taken when an animal like Heera dies in the zoo. Right now Bangladesh zoo are free to do whatever they want to. The reason behind choosing the topic is that the issue has not been highlighted until 2019. The lack of research on this topic in Bangladesh makes it a vital for us to conduct a research. Furthermore, as an animal lover it is our responsibility to spread public awareness and look at the consequences of such poor management leading to suffering, malnutrition and death.

We have generated a set of research questions that highlights the main notion of the study

  • What are the perspectives of people about the welfare of zoo animals?
  • What facilities should be increased for animal welfare that could reduce the sufferings and mistreatment of the animals?
  • What steps are being taken by the government regarding the issue of animal welfare and conservation?

The objectives of the research would also work to raise public awareness regarding how the animals are being treated there. We can raise campaign on animal rights and make people more concerned. We can also recommend areas of improvisation for the betterment of wildlife, zoo authority and the visitors. The scopes of the research is that we can promote them in social media and make people aware and concerned about the animal welfare and rights which might just be able to reach their attention and all of us together can try our best to raise our voice and bring a change and reduce animals sufferings.

The research is however limited to some limitations. Accessing properly to the zoo authority might be a limitation since they are always busy and might not feel comfortable when they are going to be interviewed. And another one could be the limited access to data when we ask the authority to provide us with their documents for content analysis. Literature review In this section we will be looking at other research works done by others on the same topic. Since there hasn’t been much research on this topic so we will be looking at the international standards of maintaining a zoo and what is being done in our national zoo.

Effects of Captivity

Effects of Captivity on the behavior of wild mammals is a research conducted by Mcphee, M. E., & Carlstead, K. (2010) by observing animal behavior where they discuss how the captive zoo environment can affect the behavioral patterns and physical wellbeing of animals. When they grow up in a very different environment, the animal starts to adjust to that environment for survival in a way which causes problems in genetic and phenotypic codes causing a permanent change in species behavior. The chances of successful reproduction decreases in captivity due to lack of opportunities to choose mating partners. The behavior in captivity are often seen as unhappy or bored as the animals have not much to do most of the time. Lack of activities can cause serious illness issues and stress. It is very important for the zoo to maintain a natural environment which can contribute to the conservation and behavior of animals.

Legislation and Policies

Farhana, R. J. Ensuring animal welfare in Bangladeshi Legislation and Policies: A comprehensive Review of National Legislations, Coordination and Implementation Failures doi: 10.9790/8037-2103048287 is a research paper which focuses on the current animal abuses in Bangladesh, Animal welfare laws and policies. The animal welfare permits the uses of animals for benefits of humans with responsibility and kindness. Animal abuses is a growing problem in Bangladesh as the legislations are not strong enough due to lack of provisions, lack of law enforcement, unawareness etc.

Many species are endangered in Bangladesh including migratory birds are killed from hunting and poaching. There are some deficiencies in the existing laws as well. The law fails to give the uniform definition of ‘Animals’. It should include zoo animals as well. Punishments for animal cruelty are not very harsh such as two months imprisonments or a few thousand taka penalties. As animal abuse is an international issue now a day’s government and non- government organizations like CFP, PAW & Obhoyaronno Foundation have been working to improve the situation as Bangladesh lacks a lot to thoroughly understand the legislative means of animal welfare.

Research Design

Since we need the most appropriate approach we are going to conduct a Qualitative Research approach for our topic. The word “Qualitative” has been used to refer to a broad philosophical and approach to research, a research methodology and a specific set of techniques. Qualitative data comes in a variety of forms such as observing on field, in depth interviews, documents, diaries and journals. – Wimmer D. R., & Dominick R. J. (2011).

Mass Media Communication

We have chosen in depth interviews, focus group discussion and qualitative document analysis as our method of research since that should allow us to gather the highest amount of information. If we do a focus group discussion then we will be having people with certain characteristics relevant to our topic who can discuss constructively and gather a solution. In-depth interviews will be helping us with detailed answers, and we might be able to find important questions according to the answers of the respondent. Finally the document analysis shall be useful since we will be getting to see the guidelines and rules of the zoo authority and what are they lacking.
