Can you imagine being taken away from your family as a child and forced to learn extremely dangerous stunts your whole life? This is the case for many wild animals that are in circuses. Many wild animals such as elephants, tigers, bears and many others are taken from their families when they are young and never get a chance to live a normal life. When animals are used as performers in circuses it is certain that they will bring in the public to come and visit.

Unfortunately those people that come to watch an elephant walking on a ball or a tiger jumping through a hoop of fire don’t know how much pain and suffering those animals endured by trainers to learn those stunts. Sadly the public is not aware of all the misfortunes these animals and many others have been through in their life. Circuses should be banned from using animals because it is cruel to not give them a chance to live a regular life, live a life in fear and force them to live without basic necessities for our entertainment.

Today there are many animals that never got a chance at living a regular life. Many animals who are part of circuses were taken from their mothers at a very young age and were raised always getting told what to do. These animals have had their whole lives planned for them from what time they have to perform, rehearse, eat or sleep. When they are not rehearsing or performing they are locked up in cages or chained up in small trailers where they live and travel in. Michael Gonchar in the article, “Should Circuses Be Animal Free”, argues that circuses using animals to perform crazy stunts for entertainment should not be allowed.

Gonchar says that it is cruel to use wild animals, such as elephants or tigers as ‘traveling entertainers’. Gonchar supports his argument by saying “Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said people have turned against animal acts as they learn more about the animals and how they are treated. “These are complex, intelligent animals, and this is a lousy, lousy, dirty, cruel business, and people see that,” she said. “This was purely a business decision.” It is cruel and wrong to take animals rights of a regular life and use animals for our entertainment.

Circus animals have the right to be protected and treated humanely under the Animal Welfare Act, they should not live in fear. The PETA website in the article, “Circuses: No Fun for Animals”, informs readers about what the life of circus animals is like. The author talks about how difficult the lives of these animals are and that they are are suffering. The author supports their information my saying, “To force animals to do these meaningless and physically uncomfortable tricks, trainers use whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks, and other weapons”. Tigers naturally fear fire, but they are still forced to jump through fire hoops in some circuses. It is not right to force a living being to live in constant fear of being abused or suffering.

It is cruel to use these animals as traveling entertainers and keeping them from their basic necessities. These animals are forced to live in small uncomfortable cages where they spend most of their lives. In those same cages they eat, sleep, urinate and defecate. Many of these animals don’t even get veterinary care when they need it and are forced to perform even when they are exhausted. The PETA website in the article, “Anguished Entertainers”, informs readers that many of theses animals are being treated inhumanely by their trainers.

The website writers, “animals are confined to cages or trailers for days at a time in extremely hot and cold weather, often without access to basic necessities such as food, water, and veterinary care. Elephants are chained, and big cats, bears, and primates are confined to cramped and filthy transport cages in which they eat, drink, sleep, defecate, and urinate.” It is absolutely wrong for circuses to get away with this, animals should be treated better than this.

Although most circuses are very successful in a business aspect when using animals, there are many circuses that do not use animals and are just if not as successful as when using animals. The success of Cirque du Soleil Circus has proved that people will still come to see acrobats, trapeze artists, etc., because they can make a good show and perform amazing stunts even though they don’t have animals. They will be doing the right thing if they could make a good show without the animals to show all of the other people that they don’t have to have them.

In conclusion, animals shouldn’t be used in circuses because animals shouldn’t be forced to do tricks in front of people for entertainment. Circuses should be banned from using animals because animals in circuses do not get a chance at a regular when they live in a circus, they live in constant fear of being abused or worse, and are taken their basic necessities when under care of circuses trainers. Animals should rome free, in the wild and not under a humans control. Animal’s purpose in life is not to entertain us, they have a right to freedom just as much as we do.
