Writers are aware of their role and potential in society. They do not only serve as a guide to the community, but also they keep the conscious of the social changes happening around them. With this awareness, writers use various tools available to them in their writing to pass their message with ease and clarity. This field of literature has evolved as it present authors with an array of styles and approach that can be used to pass their message. Authors make their preferred method in their writing depending on their intended message they want to give and also their preference of style in writing. Satire is a typical form writing that many writers have used in their work to pass their message to an audience. This form of writing usually is written with an approach of ridiculing a social system. This process of mocking society is often done using humor and irony. Aldous Huxley is using satire to ridicule government in his book “the new brave world” by use of humor.

One universal role of government is to maintain law and order. For a government to keep order, it has to be in total control of its population. Sometimes a government has to use force to contain any group of the society that may seem to be a threat to order in their community. Intellectuals are among the groups in a society who can stand against the government in case they have a different view on a matter; a situation government does not take well. In the work of Huxley, this particular society lives at an era where they use a drug called soma to give them happiness. In the same community, alphas are members of the nation with the highest intellectual capability. Generally, if they were not under the influence of soma, they could have formed a significant opposition to New world leaders, but their preoccupation in pursuit of joy made them abandon their intellectual gift. New world order leaders acknowledge the role of intellectuals by stating, “For particulars, as we know, make for virtue and happiness; generalities are a necessary intellectual evil”. For these leaders to be in total control, they understand that they only need to control the intellectuals and the society will run as they wish.

Government ideally is supposed to oversee the smooth running of events in a nation, through the power given to them by the common citizen, but sometimes the way the government runs things the opposite way. In the Brave new world, Huxley portrays government as an institution that has absolute control of the society. The government can control all aspects of society by free thinking and individuality. They put a focus on the community rather than in individuals and some characters like Bernard, Helmholtz and John fail to accept this kind of control. When the three individuals interfere with the distribution of soma, they are exiled into an island on account of engaging in antisocial activities. Through this piece of writing it is clear on the effects of government being in total control that ends with a totalitarian form of government. In this society, the government aims at building a community that can provide happiness and peace by eliminating individuality. The government is also able to determine the physical attributes and other critical details of their citizens on conception. Citizens in Brave new world lacks even the most fundamental right of making a simple decision like the color of clothes to wear and the type of transportation to use. This kind of control was commonly accepted until the likes of Bernard questioned Mustapha Mond on the cost of such total control of a society by the government.

Aldous Huxley used this piece of writing to illustrate how government deceives citizen regarding their pursuit of happiness. Sometimes government idea of happiness may be skewed, and this results in society to experience strain in their interactions. In the Huxley work titled Brave new world, the whole community used soma drug as a way of escaping the reality and the truth of their circumstances. This kind of delusion infected the entire society to a level that even their leaders could not see issues as they were. In one case the director of World State, Mustapha Mond claimed that the state put more focus on happiness rather than the truth, “People are ready to have even their appetites control then. Anything for a quiet life. We’ve gone controlling ever since. It hasn’t been very good for the truth, of course. One cannot have something for anything. Happiness has got to be paid for”. The director and other leaders failed to understand that happiness in human beings comes from having more options rather than from restriction. When an individual can make decisions, they can build the kind of life they want, and this achieves happiness in the end.

In conclusion, it is clear that Huxley uses his work Brave new world as a satire to ridicule how government runs a society. Through from government having absolute control of a community and abolishing individuality and free thinking, Brave new world society fails to achieve the happiness that they were pursuing.
