Internet: The Good and the Bad

The Internet has proved to be a very useful tool since it was first introduced to the public in 1982. Over the past years, the Intemet has grown profusely and has become a part of everyone’s lives all over the world. The Internet has become a great tool for students, teachers, and business owners but with every new invention and product, the Internet has many pros and cons. There are many people in the world nowadays that believe the Internet is all corrupt while there are others who do not believe that the Internet has any cons. While both of those types of people are wrong, there are many problems with the Internet but there is also a lot of good the Internet provides for the world (1).

Some pros of the Internet are that the world can communicate with the rest of the world very easily and affordably and obtaining information on how DIY projects easily, while some cons to the Internet are hackers acquiring one’s personal information and also online dating. Communication is one of the greatest tools the Internet brings to the world. A person in the United States is now able to connect with someone in a different part of the world, such as China, in a matter of seconds. There are many different types of communication that is available on the Internet but the most common are vide0-chatting and instant messaging. These forms of communication give great opportunities to business and also the average person. Now the world is able to communicate with friends and family for free using different websites such as Skype and Facebo0ok in place of calling them and being overcharged for long distance calls. Families are now able to talk to members of their families who are in the military and talk to them for free instead of worrying about them. Another great use of the Internet is being able to look up certain DIY projects.

With the Internet, people do not have to call a “specialist” to do the job. When a person needs to fix the brakes on their car or when they want to know how to tie a tie, the Internet has various websites and videos that will be able to help. YouTube is one of the most popular websites for videos that help with DIY projects (2). You’Tube has millions of videos on how to make or how to fix certain items. There are also review videos that others upload so one can watch the review and see if that is the product they want to purchase. Even though there are many pros to the Internet, there are also many cons. One con of the Internet is having one’s personal information stolen. Hackers have access to a person’s computer just from going on a website. They can steal bank account information and personal information such as a Social Security number and address. There are a lot of ways that others can obtain another persons” information but the Internet is by far the most common way to steal information (3).

Hackers could also have access to all of a person’s computer information if that person downloads a file from a website. Many security companies claim that they can protect all personal information but there is no “sure way” to protect against identity theft. Online dating is a tool that singles use to broaden their look for a partner. Many people do not want to go through the struggle of looking for a partner that is already in their lives so they create a fast and easy online dating profile. Others create fake accounts and lie about certain aspects of their lives to get information and money to scam people on an online dating site, Some people even open up joint bank accounts with their “partner” they met online and then get the cash stole from the account.
