Back in the old days, slavery was a very big part of the society that people used to live in. As a child was born, no matter what gender, race, or color they were, slavery was their future. Intersectionality is the unfair division of people in a society due to their race and color. Due to this, many people have to face racism and very unjust treatment in the society they live in. While we come to learn how women were sold into slavery and had to live their lives dependent on men in the speech, “Ain’t I A Women” by Sojourner Truth, Kimberle Williams Crenshaw teaches us about the people who have to face crucial and hard times due to their race and color. These people have to face racism and they get abused by other people because of their ethnicity. Sojourner Truth and Kimberle Crenshaw help us Create an understanding of the reason behind the racism and discrimination people have to face in our society due to the way they are born which no-one has the ability to control.

In the speech, “Ain’t I A Women” by Sojourner Truth, we learn that many women including herself were sold into slavery. These women were cruelly beaten and mistreated as if they were not human beings. The society created a mindset that women are supposed to be dependent on men for their survival methods and could not live their life independently. Women had to rely on men for food, money, clothing, and a shelter. However, this does not give men the right to mistreat or lay their hand on a women in an unacceptable manner. As Sojourner Truth states in her speech “Then that little man in black there, he says women can’t have as much rights as men, ’cause Christ wasn’t a woman!”(Truth, 1), these men don’t know how to respect women and treat them fairly. Everyone should be able to live their life however they want without having to face any unfair treatment or being sold into slavery. However, some societies have such messed up minds in the head that they treat women very unfairly and make them suffer for no reason. Therefore, women need to take a stand and fight for their rights.

Kimberle Williams Crenshaw teaches us that no matter if a women has to go through racism, or any sort of abuse, it has a connection with their race and color. If a women belongs to a lower class and does not have the means to be independent, the men feel that they have more power over that women since she cannot survive on her own. Therefore, men feel like they have the power to treat women however they want and not have to face any consequences which is totally wrong and unacceptable. In some cases, women are raped because of the way they dress and due to their appearance in front of men. However, this does not make it right for men to physically abuse a women because of her sense of clothing. According to Kimberle Williams Crenshaw’s article, “Mapping The Margins”, “While the intersection of race, gender, and class constitute the primary structural elements of the experience of many Black and Latina women in battering shelters, it is important to understand that there are other sites where structures of power intersect.”(Crenshaw, 3)

For example, women immigrants who get married to a U.S. Citizen to come to this country for a better life may have to face racism or other unfair treatment by men in order to achieve what they want. Most of these women were reluctant to leave even the most abusive of partners because of the fear of getting deported. According to Kimberle Williams Crenshaw, “Immigrant women may also be vulnerable to spousal violence because many of them depend on their husbands for information regarding their legal status. More than likely, many women who are now permanent residents continue to suffer abuse under threats of deportation by their husbands. Even if the threats are unfounded, women who have no independent access to information will still be intimidated by such threats.” (Crenshaw, 3) This shows that women have to suffer and live under men’s rule because they don’t have any access to the information regarding their legal status.
