Is it possible to spend days alone in the ocean? Is it possible to spend days alone in the ocean on the same boat with a tiger? The answer will mostly be “no” or “it’s impossible”. In the excerpt of The Life of Pi it tells how Pi was alone in the middle of the Pacific with animals surrounding him. In the film “The Life of Pi” more details are included with extraordinary imagery.

The excerpt started out telling us that Pi was alone and orphaned, out in the pacific hanging on to an oar. There was a storm raging and Pi was hoping that he might drown before being eaten by the tiger, Richard Parker. The ship that pi had been on before sank and there were no survivors but him. There was only rain, marauding waves of black ocean and the flotsam of tragedy, Pi’s neck was sore and his back hurt from leaning against the lifebuoy. Pi’s father was a zookeeper and Pi was left on the boat with a hyena, zebra, tiger and an orangutan. Pi was dying of thirst and hunger and found two biscuits and imagined that it was the Norwegian cuisine. Days passed and all the animals died except for Richard Parker. Pi wanted to tame him so he could communicate with hi. Pi’s plan to tame the tiger was to trick him into dying first because the tiger would listen to Pi. Pi thought to have a circus ring and communicate with him through a whistle.

However, the film states that Pi lived in the French part of India and was raised in the zoo. Piscine Molitor Patel was named after a famous swimming pool called Piscine Molitor. During his school days his school mates always called him “pissing” saying that he was “pissing in the school yard”. After all that bullying, he told them to call him Pi a number approximately 3.142. It is the circumference of any circle divided by its diameter.

Pi’s father was a zoo keeper and had many different types of animals, and there Richard Parker and Pi had their first communication. When Pi saw Richard parker he wasn’t scared to give him something to eat not knowing that Richard Parker would eat his whole hand instead of the little meat Pi had in his hand. His father then taught him a lesson and put a goat in front of Richard Parker’s cage and he ate the goat vigorously. In the end Pi and his family had to leave India and go to Canada for a better life. That same night there was a storm and the ship was sinking and Pi went on the lifeboat and was left there without anybody but animals. Pi called out to God, before that time he found his Christian faith through Hinduism. After days Pi found an island and then realized in the day it is all lavish green leaves and fresh water but in the night it is full of carcasses and dried up fish bones, then Pi sailed and sailed and ended up back home in India, having felt the warm sand on his face he stayed there until workers from the ship company “Tsimtsum and Panama” came and rescued him.

In Comparison, both story’s state how Pi was stranded on the ocean and how his parents and his elder brother died. Pi wished he could see his family again but sadly he didn’t. Both stories have different points on where it is told. The excerpt is based on his experience on the boat with the tiger. The film mostly tell his point of view stranded in the middle of the ocean. I preferred the film version better because it shows vivid imagery and gives more details on how Pi was shipwrecked.

To Conclude, “Life of Pi” both book and film version are fascinating. “Life of Pi” is a story about a 16-year-old boy who finds himself stuck on a lifeboat with four other members, a Bengal tiger, hyena, orangutan, and a zebra.
