The play, The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller is based on a true story in a small village called Salem. During 1692, the witch trials began. Throughout this paper I will be talking about the affair between two characters named John Proctor and Abigail Williams. There is another character by the name of Elizabeth Proctor which is actually the wife of John Proctor. John Proctor plays a tragic hero throughout the play and Elizabeth Proctor plays a moral, Christian woman. Lastly, Abigail Williams play is the niece of Reverend Parris and the cousin of Betty Parris. She also used to work as a servant with the Proctors. What is your claim? What are you writing about specifically without writing “I will be writing about…”???

Both John Proctor and Abigail Williams were at fault. John Proctor was at fault during the affair because he believes he has damaged his relationship between him and his wife. Although he committed adultery with Abigail Williams; however, he fails to forgive himself about his wrong actions. Unfortunately, his wife Elizabeth cannot forgive him and cannot trust him again. Now moving forward on why Abigail Williams has a part of this affair because she is a young girl and John Proctor is a married man and it would be a horrible crime.

When John Proctor tells Abigail the affair is over she becomes jealous and has hate towards his wife and she wants to find a way to get back at him for this. So Abigail and a couple of girls two by the name of Tituba and Betty Parris. While they all were caught dancing, singing, and laughing in the woods. They were caught by Reverend Parris who is Abigail Williams uncle, who is always paranoid and yet oddly self-pitying.

The authors opinion about the characters in the play varies. For example, John Proctor is an older man who is honest and has much power but until his incident that happened he’s starting to not forgive himself. Secondly, Abigail Williams is a younger girl who is obviously obsessed with John. She is also an orphan that is wanting attention. Lastly, Elizabeth Proctor is a very bitter woman and it takes her a long time to forgive her husband John. She has also been convicted of witchcraft.

In conclusion throughout the entire play there has been a lot of dramatic changes. Even though there has been some drama, it all got fixed some way or another. There was some miscommunication and some heart break. Also there was a lot of characters blaming others. Lastly, the affair between John Proctor and Abigail Williams was traumatic and reshaped the direction of the play. Finish off your essay by stating why the reader should care about this topic. What are the implications? Whats the bigger picture?
