The suspenseful horror short story of The Cask of Amontillado well written by Edgar Allan Poe. It happened during the early 1800s. It’s a gothic fictional story. The Cask of Amontillado off by showing the hurtfulness he is feeling due to the insult made by Fortunato. He is eager to plot revenge against Fortunato. The story is about a man taking fatal revenge on a friend who, he believes, has insulted him. Like several of Poe’s stories, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around a person being buried alive—in this case, by immurement. In this case, the character of Montresor is the narrator, and we are seeing the events from his perspective.
A man named Montresor is the main character. Montresor hates a man named Fortunato. The story never tells us why. Fortunato drinks a lot of alcohol. One day at a party Montresor comes up to Fortunato while he is drunk. Fortunato is drinking a lot of wine and getting very drunk. He is ruining Montresor’s furniture by breaking it or spilling drinks on it. He is also flirting with Montresor’s cousin Catherine. Montresor is angry with Fortunato. He steps in and tries to get Fortunato to leave. This makes Fortunato angry. Fortunato, who is very drunk, says that he thinks that Montresor’s mother cheated on his father to have him. Montresor is very angry and pushes him out of the house.
Montresor tells Fortunato that he has a “Cask of Amontillado,” a barrel of expensive wine, in his cellar, or basement. Montresor tells Fortunato that if Fortunato wants, he will take him to this barrel of expensive wine so that Fortunato can taste it. Fortunato says yes! Amontillado is a special kind of wine that is referred to in the story, with which character lures his victim to death. Montresor was able to manipulate this other man who’s able to kill another man. Perhaps Fortunato insulted Montresor about wine knowledge about when it comes to wine and different fragranced it has, what qualities it has, what year is better than another. The things got heated between them that would’ve insulted Montresor. If Fortunato had said” You don’t know anything about the wine business.” It may get so offensive to his honor that he vowed to get revenge. He wants revenge with impunity.
They go down into Montresor’s cellar. It’s very cold down there, but Montresor persuades Fortunato to go along a tunnel with him, an (A cask is a barrel) “Amontillado” is a type of very expensive wine. When Montresor and Fortunato get to the end of the tunnel Montresor does not give Fortunato any wine. He was lying to Fortunato. He didn’t have wine in his cellar. Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall of the tunnel. Fortunato does not fight back because he is drunk.
Montresor leaves Fortunato chained to the wall. He goes away and when he comes back, he has some bricks and mortar. Montresor starts to build a wall in front of Fortunato
He seals Fortunato into the tunnel. Because he does this with a wall, anyone who goes to that tunnel will just see a wall at the end. They will not know Fortunato is behind it
Montresor used bricks to build a wall and seal Fortunato into the tunnel
He did this because he hates Fortunato and wants him to die
Apparently, Fortunato offended him at some point. The story never tells us what Fortunato did to offend Montresor but it made Montresor want to kill him.
So, Montresor waited until Fortunato was drunk and then chained him up and walled him into the tunnel in his cellar
So, Fortunato would starve and eventually die. That is where the story ends.
