Racism has occurred for hundreds of years and still exists now. It gives people, of different backgrounds, negative acts and thought as well as disadvantages. To people of different backgrounds, racism is shown as a threat to them and it keeps others from standing up for themselves as well to be able to basically dream. Although many people stood up to racism, it still occurs every day in society. Racism can show in many different ways, and books are used as a way to portray them.
The book, The house in mango street, was written by Sandra Cisneros showed many occurrences of racism. The chapter, Geraldo No Last Name, showed a specific event where Geraldo ended up in the hospital after a hit-and-run and didn’t get treated by anyone. A single surgeon didn’t show up because they realized that Geraldo was a Mexican immigrant. On page 66, the book stated a quote, “Maybe if the surgeon would’ve come, maybe if he hadn’t lost too much blood, if only the surgeon had only come, they would know how to notify and where. This event shows that racism has occurred through Geraldo and his background. This quote from the book shows that people of different backgrounds are treated unfairly. Even when it comes to life and death situations, people are still judged by their backgrounds. This scene shows especially that not everyone are cared for equally. Instead, people of American culture have an advantage because the first thing that others think is that they have more power over them and receive more attention. Geraldo represents people from immigration, while the surgeons represent the unfair treatment towards immigrants.
Another chapter that shows awareness of racism is “No Speak English” on page 76-78.
A short scene from this chapter is how Mamacita showed heartbreaking and racism when her son started to speak English after moving from Mexico to America. This event in the book shows how immigrants from other countries fear growing up into places especially in the United States. When Mamacita sees and hears her son speaking English, it shows that she doesn’t like the American world and this shows a bit of racism because she brings hate and sadness towards American culture. In this chapter Mamacita is representing the hate of America and her son is represent the racism that Mamacita has. On page 78, it states that her child is singing along to an English song and how she is trying to stop her son from learning more English. Mamacita shows racism towards the English language when she tries to prevent her son from singing. Racism plays a big role in Mamacitas life because she is terrified of the fact that she doesn’t fit in with others. This part of the book explains how racism will affect immigrants if we purposely try to create fear for others. Creating that fear for immigrants will have a huge impact on how they will live their life in other places they are not use to, and Mamacita is showing what it’s like to be affected by racism.
The main character of the book, The House on Mango Street, is Esperanza. She is a girl who wants to live her own life, but because of how women of the Mexican culture are expected to just get married, and it is a huge stone for her to get around in order to follow her dream. This does quite show racism because she can be judged how she didn’t get to follow her dream just because of what her father expected of her. Esperanza doesn’t follow what her father expects, so when people quickly judge that she didn’t have much freedom as others did, it seems racist in Esperanaza’s point of view.
