A man isn’t himself without his soul. In the novel “Anthem” by Ayn Rand and “The Soul of a Collectivist” by Ayn Rand speaks about that. The very essence of the prisoner was taken away from them. The soul was destroyed and put back together with missing pieces. The prisoners can never be their old selves because of the missing puzzle pieces. The prisoners of the Palace of Corrective Detention will never try to escape.
When being raised up before the council, they kill all the human rights and the human attributes in a man. Therefore there would not be any reason that the man could even think about acting differently or acting out against the rules. Ayn Rand states, “Bring them to a state where saying ‘I want’ is no longer a natural right, but a shameful admission.” Ayn Rand made it very clear to anyone that a person, when put under this council, will come to a point of full admission. Their human right will be taken out of them and will be replaced as a shameful attribute. Therefore without having a full sense of free will the prisoner will have no sense of trying to escape if he doesn’t have the “wants” or “concern of himself” to break out of imprisonment.
In Anthem the people of the society have been shaped into believing that they deserve to be punished. The basic human need has been taken out of them. Their soul has been taken out and remade in the council’s image, made as of a slave. They are no longer human, but more of an “item”, or an “object”. Ayn Rand stated in “The Soul of a Collectivist”, “The soul, Peter, is that which can’t be ruled. It must be broken. Drive a wedge in, get your fingers on it-and the man is yours. You won’t need a whip-he’ll bring it to you and ask to be whipped.” The soul is the strongest part of a man, the hardest to take control of. However, the council has already made a way to gain full control over the soul of an individual and most importantly the whole society. From every action to every single thing the people of the society do, everyday is controlled by the council. If the men do something wrong they want to be punished; no wrong, in right eyes, can be classified as good. The men want the wrong out of them, no matter what it takes. They want to belong, to thrive in the society with the rest of the individuals. After years of these ideologies the men now hand the whip to the council instead of the council punishing them. No man in their right mind would go against that of which he has wanted for himself. No man would break out of his own imprisonment.
In the novel Anthem many “collectivist” were present, especially in the council. They took away men’s souls and replaced it with their own information. They reprogrammed their souls to feel needed to be punished for things they do wrong. This is has a great impact on the lives of the prisoners in the “Palace of Corrective Detention”. It drove them to want to fit in better with their brothers, they wanted to correct themselves in order to do that. That caused the prisoners to not escape from prison no matter how old the locks or doors were, nor how secure the prison was.
