Marijuana was discovered around 2700 B.C., it was discovered by the emperor Shen Nung. Shen Nung was known as “The Divine Healer” because he invented herbs to cure people’s illnesses. Over the years marijuana has gained many different names such as weed, pot, 420, Ganga, broccoli, reefer, cannabis, dope, hash, herb, the list goes on and on. Marijuana comes in many different forms like CBD(Cannabidiol) oil, edibles (brownies, gummies, candy), dab pens(THC infused vape pens), or buying marijuana. According to “International Statistics” 3.8% or 158.8 million people use marijuana, of that 158.8 million people worldwide 94 million of them are American that have admitted to using marijuana at least once. Marijuana has gotten a bad reputation from lots of people, but of the people who say it is bad how many of them have taken the time to research the benefits of Marijuana? The legalization of marijuana can improve the health of people, help out our economy tremendously, and decrease the unemployment rate.
According to “Why We Should Not Legalize Marijuana” and “Marijuana Statistics” weed should remain illegal because it is considered a gateway drug. 62% of cocaine users smoked marijuana before the age of 15, of those 62%; 9% went on to use heroin. Opposers feel that there would be an increase in the amount of DUI’s and DWI’s due to people driving while they are high. A majority of the opposers are parents that have young children or teenagers, they have a concern about their children using marijuana and their usage of marijuana potentially leading to the use of harsher drugs such as heroin. Some people on the opposing side feel that the world would not be a healthy place, because if marijuana were to be legalized the second-hand smoke rate would increase. This is not good for people COPD, asthma, lung cancer, any kind of lung disease or illness.
According to “Why Should We Legalize?” people feel that marijuana should be legal because it would decrease the unemployment rate because someone would be needed to grow marijuana and someone would be needed to sell the marijuana. The economy would benefit from the legalization of marijuana because the government would place a tax on marijuana that would cause them to make potentially billions of dollars, that they could use to increase the pay of teachers and other government or state officials. According to “Why Should Marijuana Be Legal? Voice of Supporters” marijuana has lots of medical benefits that could improve the health of someone suffering from certain illnesses. Marijuana could help with someone who has epilepsy, it slows down the progression of Alzheimer’s, stops the spreading of cancer, helps with glaucoma, it can also stimulate the appetite of someone undergoing chemotherapy.
The legalization of marijuana could also decrease the amount of fines and charges that are filed for people who have marijuana in their possession when they get pulled over by the police. It would decrease the overpopulation of county jails or federal prisons due to a simple marijuana charge.
If marijuana were to be legalized not only would the economy benefit but our society would benefit because when marijuana is ingested it causes an appetite-stimulating hormone to stimulate the sense of smell and taste. This causes marijuana smokers to feel hungry this is known as “The Munchies”, this would cause an increase in grocery stores’ profits. Marijuana is a harmless drug that is very unlikely to overdose on, the most likely reason that someone would overdose on marijuana would be because something else was on it.
In conclusion, the legalization of marijuana could possibly be an on-going debate because there is an equal amount of good and bad that comes with the legalization of marijuana. Our society would greatly benefit from the legalization of marijuana due to the increase in profits the government and other businesses would make, and also the benefits for people dealing with illnesses such as cancer and Parkinson’s. This would be good because the people suffering from these illnesses could go and purchase marijuana without having to worry about breaking the law or getting caught.
