With 2.2 billion gamers worldwide and the gaming industry generating a revenue of 135 billion dollars, gaming serves as a job as well as past-time for people around the globe. From Game Boy to PlayStation, Space Invaders to Skyrim, the history of video games and gaming is both vast and impressive. Today, the gaming industry is booming on a worldwide scale. The advanced technology used in modern day PCs and consoles gives people the opportunity to play games of such calibre that they often cannot differentiate between reality and games. The first generation of gaming came along with the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972, a gaming console which featured games such as Simon Says and Haunted House. Atari, the leading gaming company of the 1980s, kickstarted the trend of competitive gaming tournaments with their first one being held in 1980.

Being as a hype it was, many companies jumped into the gaming industry with arcade gaming coming into action, which included the much-loved Pac-Man. But, this was followed by the great game crash in 1983 as the video game market became oversaturated with lots of companies trying to grab the opportunity, creating poor, knock-off versions of major releases. People started to lose interest due to the lack of quality control which saw the sales of video games decline heavily. In 1989, Nintendo introduced the Game Boy, a programmable handheld game system which was seen in almost everyone’s hands around the globe. This big leap inspired many, Microsoft being one of them. They introduced preloaded games such as Solitaire and Minesweeper into their PC’s and people who loathed games, found themselves playing these addictive ones. In 1995, the tech giant, Sony came into the industry with the release of the PlayStation. With polygon graphics and a slick design, it was a console every gamer craved for.

Nintendo, not far behind, released a game that still captivates many, Pokemon. As of 2019, there have been a total of 122 titles released of the Pokemon franchise. 1997 saw the release of Grand Theft Auto, a best-selling series which engaged millions due to its revolutionary free form structure. This meant you could do almost anything in the vast, open map, whether it be stealing cars or getting into a casual shoot-out with the cops. Over the years, the gaming industry’s revolution has brought to the world a gripping experience, from Call of Duty to Minecraft and from PUBG to Fortnite. Mobile gaming has also seen a great increase with smartphones now coming with astonishing gaming capabilities and apps. Streaming and making videos about gaming has brought fortunes to many and is regarded as a job now. The future of gaming lies in Virtual and Augmented Reality. With technology and games already being developed and sold, it blends reality with fiction as you get a first-hand experience of the games you love. We can simply wait and watch as this mind-blowing future of gaming unfolds.
