Marijuana, is it a drug or simply a miracle plant produced by the Earth to help the people of the world today? Over the centuries cannabis or marijuana has been used as an herb, a medicine, as hemp for rope-making, and as a recreational drug. It has been publicized as a harmful drug because many U.S. citizens do not realize how beneficial it could be. Marijuana legalization is a very controversial dispute in society today. I believe firmly in the legalization of marijuana, with benefits such as the most commonly known medical use, it would also increase tax revenue, and allows law enforcement to focus on more violent crimes why would anyone disagree.
The use of medical marijuana today can treat symptoms caused by diseases or by the drugs used to treat them. The most research done on medical marijuana has been its effectiveness with reducing nausea from chemotherapy used to treat cancer. The American Association of Cancer Research has discovered marijuana to steady the growth rate of a tumor in the breast, brain, and lungs by a notably large amount. It can also relieve muscle spasms that are sometimes associated with multiple sclerosis and paralysis. In conditions such as HIV/AIDS and certain types of cancers, the loss of appetite is very common which is where marijuana steps in and helps increase the appetite of those who have these conditions. Studies show that marijuana helps treat symptoms of glaucoma by relieving pressure in the eye. Pharmaceutical marijuana is also known to relieve certain types of chronic pain similar to neuropathic pain. It is also proven to be safer than some prescribed drugs used to treat chronic pain. For example, opioids are pain killers that were often prescribed to a patient with chronic pain but seeing as it’s highly addictive and harmful after long term use, doctors are now using medical cannabis because it’s safer. The availability of medicinal cannabis would help improve public health and be less of a drain on the healthcare system.
The increase in tax revenue is one of the biggest pros that have come from the legalization dispute. A large amount of money spent on stopping illegal trade in marijuana could be saved if it is legalized and regulated. If marijuana was legalized it could be taxed in line with other managed products such as alcohol and tobacco. In 2015 legal sales of cannabis amounted to $996 million and the tax revenue collected from the sales equally staggered at $135 million With that money it could be used to fund community projects and improve schools. Also with selling cannabis products legally the risk of buying laced drugs will disappear because it would create a set of standards for quality and safety control. This set of standards for quality and safety control there is less risk of serious problems occurring due to overdose on unknown substances hidden in the marijuana that is sold on the streets.
All the benefits and facts I have presented and you still not convinced. Maybe this one will convince you to share the same belief as me and many other U.S. citizens. Have you ever had a family member go to jail for recreational drug use? If so, with the legalization of marijuana it will not happen ever again because it will give them more time to focus on more violent crimes. Studies show more than 700,000 arrests in weed involved cases are for possession and with legalizing marijuana it would ease the pressure on the criminal justice system. Often law enforcement and the court system become submerged with handling persons brought in for simply possessing marijuana. Also with the increase of tax revenue, it will provide the police and the courts with more money which means with this funding means more people get employed to handle the load and with more people means more time, with this more time comes with more attention paid to preventing violent crimes. Legalizing marijuana would conclude in the reduction of illegal activities involving trade in this drug. Marijuana is really a miracle plant why not legalize it.
