In the 1940s, many things were manufactured. The Jeep was born, microwave ovens were made, the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, etc. However, I’m going to talk about the Holocaust, which was one of the worst events in history, but before that in 1945, a young girl named Anne Frank and her family went into hiding because of the increasing influence of the Germans. “For the dead and the living, we must bear witness,” (by Elie Wiesel from goodreads.com) In other words, we must bear witness so things like this won’t happen again.
It was possible for the Holocaust to take place due to man’s hatred towards others. People are easily influenced by other people with ideals or just plain hatred that’s born within them. Some people have these mental illnesses and either get help or do something about it like Hitler. He took his ideals and unfortunately, made it into a reality thus, turning it into the Holocaust. “Surely there is no more wretched sight that the human body unloved and uncared for.” (by Corrie Ten Boom from goodreads.com)
In late 1941, the Germans began building killing centers at concentration camps in Poland, Chelmno, Sobibor, Treblinka, Majdanek and Auschwitz-Birkenau. From 1942 to 1945, Jews were deported to the camps from all over Europe, including German-controlled territory as well as those countries allied with Germany. Fed up with the deportations, disease and constant hunger, the inhabitants of the Warsaw Ghetto rose up in armed revolt. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising from April 19-May 16, 1943 ended in the death of 7,000 Jews, with 50,000 survivors sent to extermination camps. Though the Nazis tried to keep operation of camps secret, the scale of the killing made this virtually impossible. Eyewitnesses brought reports of Nazi atrocities in Poland to the Allied governments, who were harshly criticized after the war for their failure to respond, or to publicize news of the mass slaughter. “As the Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel warned years ago, to forget a holocaust is to kill twice.” ( by Iris Chang from goodreads.com).
One way is to prevent conditions from existing in countries where they feel they have to turn to a dictator to solve problems. Because of the heavy reparations imposed by the terms of the Versailles Treaty, Germany went into a severe depression in the 1920s. This gave Hitler the opportunity to rise to power. Since Germany had little experience in its history with a democratic government, Hitler was able to seize power relatively easily.
The remains of the Holocaust were slow to heal. Survivors of the camps found it nearly impossible to return home, as in many cases they had lost their families and been denounced by their non-Jewish neighbors. As a result, the late 1940s saw an unprecedented number of refugees. An effort to punish the villains of the Holocaust, the Allies held the Nuremberg Trials of 1945-46, which brought Nazi atrocities to horrifying light. The Holocaust was an event that should’ve never happened. But due to the sin in man’s hearts (and minds), this was unfortunately the result. The only thing to do from that point is to keep moving forward.
