This story has a very weird way of getting the meaning behind this. The story is centered around a man and a woman at a station drinking different beverages while they talk. They only seem to talk for a certain amount of time before you can sort of see a sense of tension rising while the man keeps trying to kindle what relationship they have and also sort of seems he is head of heels of this girl.

She very adamantly tries to make him stop talking for about half of the story but he tries to be sentimental with her to win her back in a sense. When they are at this station I believe that they must be leaving together they never directly tell you if they are running away or not but in the story some of the conversation they have together kind of gives us this hint of what could be going on with these very complicated people.

Looking off in the distance the women notices and makes the statement that the hills look like white elephants. Later in the story she admits that the hills don’t really look like white elephants saying it just resembled elephant skin when the light hit the trees. The story seems to be going smoothly until they decided to get another drink called an “Anis del Toro” whilst getting the women seems to change the entire mood by saying “Everything tastes of liquorice. Especially all the things you’ve waited so long for, like absinthe.” At this point in the story we are given this comment and left to interpret if it has any significant meaning with their past and why this seemed to bother him so much.

Throughout this tension the man tries to make what good could still be left. In the story she goes on to say that she is worried and that he knows how she gets. They both seem to confess their love for eachother but are having a hard time in the relationship because she gets very complicated in the very middle of the story. It almost seems like a pity party she tries to have with him saying she will go along with getting on the train because she doesn’t like herself, “Then I’ll do it. Because I don’t care about me.”

The man seems to try and plead with her trying to get her out of this mindset she has put herself in. The rest of the story seems to be her just being negative and contradicting him on things he says until the they get there last drink she seems to have gotten herself into a better mood when he gave her some space to think ending story story with them waiting.
