In the book, 1984 written by George Orwell, it is based on the how the government is able to control its people. The idea of propaganda is used immensely due to the community being “discourse”. Propaganda is defined as “information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.”. In this case, propaganda is used as a bias technique to be able to promote a favorite cause.
Propaganda connects to a discourse community, because the citizens that are being written about share values and are able to connect with each other through that. Citizens are brainwashed and controlled in their everyday lives to the point where they have no privacy and are not allowed to speak freely upon political topics and events. Propaganda is also a part of citizens everyday lives, due to it being shown on the broadcast news. These news seem to make the government appear efficient and trustworthy. These broadcasts are to never be turned off and citizens are not able to get away from the patriotism that the government seems to care for and show. The propaganda that the government uses heavily is the Big Brother manipulation stunt.
The idea that “Big Brother is always watching” scares people into being good citizens and manipulates the citizens into keeping the government up with their everyday lives. The propaganda is also used to create a bias against Goldstein whom is a figure that acts such as Big Brother against its people. Propaganda is used in this case by broadcasting “Two Minutes Hate” on everyone’s telescreen. All citizens are required to drop whatever they are doing to participate in this short program in which talks solely upon the enemies of Oceania, such as Immanuel Goldstein. Lies and rumors are spread about these enemies, so that the government can manipulate their discourse community into thinking they are the absolute best. The reasin why Oceania dislikes Golstein so much, is becuase he is the absolute opposite of what Big Brother does to its citizens.

Goldstein is the face of rebellion and allows its citizens to speak freely upon their own opinions. This government wants their citizens uniform and not against them so they do not risk being brought down and taken over by rebellions. Because of the fact that Big Brother is always watching, citizens are basically imprisoned and not able to use their natural rights. They have to act as if they all love the government and not want to rebel against it.
