My mom once told me that Jennifer Lopez uses an expensive face lotion on her body. Why? To take care of it. Many people don’t treat their skin with the kindness it deserves. You only get one piece of skin. We’re not like snakes that get to shed their skin. Our skin is the largest organ of our body. Treat it with the kindness and luxury it deserves. There are many different ways to treat your skin, and there are many different industries and branches that fall into the category of skincare: Acne, wrinkles, moisturizers, dry skin, sunscreen. I’ll be focusing on two from those that I’ve listed; Acne and sunscreen.
The market for acne is huge these days especially because it targets preteens, teens, and those that suffer adult acne. 80% of teens suffer from acne these days, and it is the most common skin disease. Don’t worry. You’re not alone. So why do people get acne? If your pores become clogged with sebum, an oily secretion, or dead skin cells. An imbalance in hormones can also play a role in acne. Not to mention genetics. If your family is known to have acne, then you will probably have acne too.
Treating acne can be very expensive, but it is well worth it. Some people like to use, or go for drug-store brands. Others go to dermatologists for help if the acne is severe and doesn’t go away with drug-store face washes or creams. These people are trying to make a difference in their skin and be happier with what they’re not comfortable with. I know I was like that.
Junior year I suffered with severe acne. It wasn’t as bad as cystic acne, but it was pretty bad. I had clear skin my sophomore year, but I suddenly broke out. I didn’t know why, it just happened. My mom took me to a dermatologist after countless drug-store products didn’t work. The dermatologist recommended that I take some pills for my acne which I obliged to because at that point I was open to anything, I had a set night-time routine. demonstrate my products.
And she also told me the importance of sunscreen. It’s tedious to use all these products, especially because I’m tired after a long day of work or sometimes I’m just lazy, but it is well worth it in the end. *show before and after photos.* Not only do they help your skin, but it helps boost your self confidence. I’m not saying you need clear skin to be confident, but to me it helped.
Going back to what my dermatologist said, she said we need to use sunscreen everyday. The skin is very important. Depending on the melanin you have, you’re lucky. You less prone to wrinkles, and the melanin helps protect against UV rays. But you should still wear some sunscreen! Those with less melanin should wear sunscreen more often because they’re most at risk from the sun. On average, a person’s risk for melanoma cancer doubles if he/she has had more than five sunburns. In a randomized trial follow-up, Dr. Williams found that a regular daily use of SPF 15 or higher sunscreen reduces the risk of developing melanoma by 50%. An estimated 90% of skin aging is done by the sun. An estimated 87,110 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed and an estimated 9,730 will die from melanoma by the end of this year. Please wear your sun hats and stay in the shade when possible. We may not be rich and buy luxury face creams for body lotions like J-Lo, but we can protect our skin from harmful UV rays and not stay out in the sun for too long.
Sometimes, there are occasions where nothing works. Some individuals have tried everything. Taken pills, gone to dermatologists, gone on all natural diets, and their skin has stayed the same, but nothing has changed. So is treating your skin worth it? Skin care industries make big money off of people from their insecurities and from them maintaining their skin care regiments. So is it worth spending your hard earned money to treatyour skin? To treat your acne? To protect your skin from harmful UV rays? Are the costs worth the benefits? Yes. Yes it is.
