Over the few decade teenagers across America have been getting their license, From the age of fifteen, a teen can take a class to take their permit test. As the number of teen with license increases so does the number of accidents and casualties. Many people have questions if the minimum age for driving be raised or should they allow teens to drive until they are eighteen years old. Many parents and teens would argue that the minimum age is fine as it is, I disagree. Due to more teens driving the rates of accidents went up, and they are teens which mean texting while driving and get distracted.
Since the 1990s teenager have been allowed to driver as soon as the age of sixteen, over the years the number of teens drivers have raised tremendously. More teens have the taking the road which mean with more accidents due to lack of experience and distractions. According to source 1 “Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15- to 20-year-olds (based on 2005 figures, which are the latest mortality data currently available from the National Center for Health Statistics).
In 2008, 2,739 15- to 20-year-old drivers were killed and an additional 228,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes.” Parents always say that teens are the future, and they need a good education to survive in the real world. What about safety? Is the driving to every football, cheer leading practice more important than their safety?
It is true that teens these days are involved in more activities than ever, from school, extracurricular activities, jobs, and social events usually require some form of transportation. Although teens driving themselves to wherever they need is more help full than bothering their parents what about prevention?
According to table 1” in 2008, 12 percent (5,864) of all drivers involved in fatal crashes (50,186) were young drivers age 15 to 20 years old, and 14 percent (1,429,000) of all drivers involved in police-reported crashes (10,081,000) were young drivers”. To prevent these number from going up parents should talk to their kids about driving and to be careful when driving. If we do not act quickly then more lives will be lost.
In conclusion, teen is not mature enough to take such a big responsibility, the minimum age for driving should be because the main cause of deaths for teens is texting while driving. Research has shown that teenagers brain is not developed enough to drive. If teens are the future shouldn’t we do something for, so they can live to see that future?
