“Why I Wrote “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “The Road not Taken” written by Robert Frost have both similar literal movement such as realism. Many different literacy movements were going on some authors stayed with the same style others changed because it was the new thing to change. I am writing about both stories, because I am trying to show you how realism continues throughout different literary eras. It is demonstrated on how the author from both stories defines realism describing different situations even though they are from different literary era.
Many different literal movements where happening when this literary works where written. As the author of Volume C of The Norton Anthology states “Realism was (and is) a slippery term” (Levine, pg7), and also he mentions “it was used to refer to literary fiction that was rooted in the observation and documentation of the detail of everyday life” (Levine, pg7). Showing the meaning behind the literary term that is being used in both literal works.
An example on how realism is shown is in description on “Why I Wrote “The Yellow Wallpaper” would be when the author states “It has to my knowledge saved one woman from a similar fate—so terrifying her family that they let her out into normal activity and she recovered” (Gilman, pg856). The author is showing on why she wrote the story based on real life experience of her while in this situation. In one of the research paper the Lorelee Mackpike mentions “Her reality she presented not directly, but though the objects comprising the backdrop of her narrator’s life” Showing how the author thinks that in “The Yellow Wallpaper” Gilman is using her own story within this story, and describing how she felt going through this illness.

An example where the author showed realism from experiences is when the main character stated “and am absolutely forbidden to “work” until I am well again. Personally, I disagree with their ideas” (Gilman, pg844). Explaining how the main character thought of the treatment and this is portraying how the author felted when she could not do anything while she was resting as been told. As the story goes many things are happening to the main character because she could not do anything that she wanted to, so she got worse day by day inside the room thinking on what she could do to get out from there.
In the other section on why the author wrote the story the reader can tell that some situations happened to her, and wanted to let the world know how it affects many patients and that maybe they should change the treatment. As time passed different literal movements where happening some stay the same others changed.
Another story that uses this literal term in their works is the poem written by Robert Frost “The Road Not Taken”. An example would be when the author states “I took the ones less traveled by, And that has made all the difference” (19-20). This shows realism in a way that the author regrets the path he took, because there were two paths to take as the poem describes. In this poem the author uses the theme of regret towards the decisions that one takes in life, and how there is always two different paths that different people take.
Even though there is sometimes a similar path that every person takes, but the author or character that the author is portraying takes a different path than everyone else. In the poem the reader can see how the author talks about that there is different paths or decsions to get to where it is desire that is difficult to choose among the selections and one may regret and suffer the consequences. It could be that oneself can suffer the consequences or others around. In one of the research the Michelle Lee stated “Thomas expressed regret that they must choose one road over another”.
Showing that Robert Frost used real life experience of his friend as mentioned in the article that he had regret on taking the path he took. Even though he did not used his own personal experience as in the other story mentioned he uses his friend experience. Realism is being used throughout this poem it is expressing regret as it is in the point of view of his friend.
Even though they used the same literal term they used in different ways in their literal works. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” the author portrayed realism to describe on how patients were treated when they had the disease, and how they always obeyed on what the husband said. Also she used her own experience when she was being treated for the disease that she had, and how this story made a huge difference in the medical field such as the treatment that was being used.
The physicians at first did not want to change the treatment because they thought that if they changed it something wrong would happen with the patient being treated. In the poem “The Road not Taken” the author is describing realism on the two paths that the traveler is taking can lead to regret if the one not desire is not taken. He portrays on the experience of his friends and not himself as “The Yellow Wallpaper” did which is one of the differences that both literal works have.
Also in “The Road not Taken” the author is describing on how two roads may look the same but are totally different once taken. As the last part of the stanza the author states “And that has made all the difference” (20). Showing how one can regret the decision that is made that is how the author friend felted as the article mentions. There are many differences between them, but one of the similarities is that both describe life events as it is from self-experience or from others. Even though they are from different literal era’s realism is seen in both works.
Overall, realism is when the author describes events or tells in their stories on how really life is for every one and for them. In “Why I Wrote “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman the author portrays herself as the main character because she felted that way while she was being treated for the disease. She uses realism in many different situations in different parts of the story, and later tells the reader on why she wrote this short story. She wrote it because she wanted to let the people know on how hard it was while staying in the room.
In “The Road not Taken” written by Robert Frost uses realism to describe on what his friend is going through as the article mentions. In the poem he uses many words that describe those paths the traveler or his friend sees when making a decision about a situation that is happening. In both works the reader can see how the literal movement of realism is being used throughout the literal eras on both authors. Even though different types of authors changed to the new literal movement both authors of this literal works mentioned both used the same.
