Introduction
This book assignment is about the books pride and prejudice, and sense and sensibility. Both books I have read are written by Jane Austen. Pride and prejudice, and sense and sensibility are two of Jane Austen’s most popular books. The reason I had decided to read these books was because I have heard a lot of good reviews, and I want to find out for myself if the books were good.
Comparison
There are a lot of similarities between pride and prejudice, and sense and sensibility.
First, both books have a strong female protagonist. They follow their hearts, despite the pressure they get to marry. They choose who they love and do not marry just because they have to, but because they want to. In pride and prejudice Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth, but she declines because she does not love him. In sense and sensibility Marianne rejects Brandon’s interests in her, because she is not interested in him. This shows how strong these women are.
Secondly, the land and property of the families of the main characters is entailed to a male heir. Which is why their families are in long-term economic peril. The estate in pride and prejudice goes to the sisters’ cousin Mr. Collins. In sense and sensibility John, the son of the sisters’ father from his first marriage, is heir to the estate of the sisters’ family.
An important difference between pride and prejudice, and sense and sensibility is in the writing style. Both books are written in chronological order, but the writing style in sense and sensibility is less wordy compared to pride and prejudice. Sense and sensibility has less chapters where nothing happens. As a result, sense and sensibility has more pace in the story.
In both pride and prejudice, and sense and sensibility the story focuses on the two elder sisters in a large family. The two sisters are in both books confidants, but withhold essential information from each other. Between the sisters also subsists a special regard and affection. In both books there is at least one younger sister. In sense and sensibility the sisters serves more as a background character, while the younger sister in pride and prejudice a crucial part in the plot of the story has.
Conclusion
I would read another book written by Jane Austen. Most of the books she has written are similar to each other. But by changing certain details, characteristics and small storylines, she makes her books different enough so you don’t feel that you have read a book of her once already.
The books Jane Austen writes are love story’s with happy endings. When I read a romantic novel, I like it when the book has a happy ending. When the story does not have a happy ending, you will feel sad after finishing a book, instead of happy. An important thing I life is being happy, so why would you read a book that makes you feel sad?
Another thing I like about books written by Jane Austen are the female protagonists. She writes strong females who are uncommonly independent for their time. I think it is one of the things that makes Jane Austen a good writer.
I think more young people should read Jane Austen books. Although some aspects are not relevant anymore, her books have some important messages for young girls.
